Sensing Dog Brain Reactions to Smell by AI Speckle Pattern Analysis.. Investigation of a dog's brain activity related to their outstanding olfactory capabilities has been a topic of interest among researchers. For this specific study, we identified three areas of the brain that have been shown in previous studies to be relevant during the process of smell discrimination in dogs: the olfactory bulb, hippocampus, and amygdala. We set up a detection structure system based on laser and a camera to capture speckle patterns on the three regions in four dog breeds for smell stimuli: garlic, menthol, alcohol, and marijuana. The results were analyzed using an XGBoost model. Our analysis revealed tha…

Stimulating and Recording Brain Signals in an Olfactory Context: Non-Canonical Brain Structures May Contribute to Olfactory Processing – A Case Series. Abstract Unlike some other sensory systems, the sense of smell does not benefit yet from a ready-to-use or advanced olfactory implant or prosthesis. The principle of an olfactory implant rests upon volatile compounds that are captured by sensors mimicking the olfactory epithelium, translating them into different stimulation patterns which are then sent to central brain structures. The potential of stimulating a brain structure that does not seem to belong to the primary olfactory pathway, but is part of olfactory networks, has to our knowled…

Reliability, repeatability, and age associations of the dogSIT (dog Smell Interaction Test) battery in untrained companion dogs (Canis lupus familiaris).. Current olfactory tests for untrained dogs have limitations due to use of a single odorant, requirement for ambulation, and potential for vision interference. We hypothesized that our new dogSIT odorant test battery measures would be reliable, repeatable, and age-associated in untrained companion dogs. Gently restrained dogs were presented with 18 odorants (in 9 pairs, one pair was subsequently excluded from analysis); odorants were contained in identical stainless-steel tea-balls. Odorants were presented for 30s in a habituation-dishabit…

The dog (Canis familiaris or Canis lupus familiaris) is a domesticated descendant of wolves. Also called the domestic dog, it was selectively bred during the Late Pleistocene by hunter-gatherers. Dogs and the modern gray wolf share a common ancestor. Dogs were the first species to be domesticated over 14,000 years ago, before the development of agriculture, though genetic studies suggest the domestication process may have begun over 25,000 years ago. Due to their long association with humans, dogs have gained the ability to thrive on a starch-rich diet that would be inadequate for other canids. Dogs have been bred for specific behaviors, sensory abilities, and physical traits. Dog breeds va…

The sense of smell, or olfaction, is the special sense through which smells (or odors) are perceived. The sense of smell has many functions, including detecting desirable foods, hazards, and pheromones, and plays a role in taste. In humans, it occurs when an odor binds to a receptor within the nasal cavity, transmitting a signal through the olfactory system. Glomeruli aggregate signals from these receptors and transmit them to the olfactory bulb, where the sensory input will start to interact with parts of the brain responsible for smell identification, memory, and emotion. There are many different things which can interfere with a normal sense of smell, including damage to the nose or smel…
