Oregano (US: , UK: ; Origanum vulgare), sometimes called wild marjoram, is a species of flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region but widely naturalised elsewhere in the temperate Northern Hemisphere, particularly the United States and Mexico. Oregano is a woody perennial plant, growing up to 90 cm (35 in) tall, with opposite leaves 1–4 cm (0.5–1.5 in) long covered with trichome. Young stems are typically square and hairy and become woody with age. The flowers, which can be white, pink or light purple, are 3–4 mm (0.12–0.18 in) long and produced in clustered, erect spikes in summer. Along with its close relative O. majorana (sweet marjoram), ore…

Adulteration of Oregano Herb and Essential Oil. The goal of this bulletin is to provide timely information and/or updates on issues of intentional and accidental adulteration and mislabeling of oregano herb and essential oil (EO).* It provides information on issues of adulteration and mislabeling of oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum, O. onites) herb used as a spice and herbal remedy, in particular with winter savory (Satureja montana, Lamiaceae) herb, sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana, Lamiaceae) herb, Cistus spp. (Cistaceae) leaf, olive (Olea europaea, Oleaceae) leaf, thyme (Thymus spp., Lamiaceae) herb, summer savory (Satureja hortensis, Lamiaceae) herb, strawberry (Fragaria spp., R…

Marjoram (, Origanum majorana, syn. Majorana hortensis Moench) is a cold-sensitive perennial herb or undershrub with sweet pine and citrus flavours. In some Middle Eastern countries, marjoram is synonymous with oregano, and there the names sweet marjoram and knotted marjoram are used to distinguish it from other plants of the genus Origanum. It is also called pot marjoram, although this name is also used for other cultivated species of Origanum.

Antioxidant Properties and Bioactive Compounds of Oregano, Sage, Basil, Rosemary, and Herbal Mixtures.. Herbs and spices are traditionally added to food in cuisines around the world. Antioxidant activity and content of bioactive compounds were compared in oregano, sage, basil, rosemary, and herbal mixtures. After optimization of ultrasound-assisted extraction of the ethanol-water extracts, the content of reducing compounds of the herb extracts was tested using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, and antioxidant capacity was evaluated with ABTS (2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)diammonium salt) and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical) assays. Oregano showed the highest a…

Herbes de Provence (French: [ɛʁb də pʁɔvɑ̃s]; Provençal: èrbas de Provença, [ˈɛr.bas də pɾoˈvɛn.sa]) is a mixture of dried herbs considered typical of the Provence region of southwestern France. Formerly simply a descriptive term, commercial blends started to be sold under this name in the 1970s. These blends often contain savory, marjoram, rosemary, thyme, oregano, tarragon, basil, bay leaves, and black pepper. Lavender leaves or buds are also sometimes included in North American formulations. The herb mixture is typically used with grilled foods, stews, and soups.

Chromosome-level genome assembly of Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum reveals evolutionary insights and regulatory modules in terpenoid biosynthesis.. Oregano ( Origanum vulgare ) is a highly valued aromatic herb for culinary, medicinal, and ornamental purposes. Its commercial value is largely from its essential oil (EO), which is rich in key bioactive terpenoids, such as carvacrol and thymol. Greek oregano ( O. vulgare subsp. hirtum ) subspecies is particularly prized for its high EO content. In this study, we generated a high-quality genome assembly of Greek oregano to investigate its evolutionary trajectory and the genetic basis of terpenoid biosynthesi…

Safety and efficacy of a feed additive consisting of an essential oil derived from the leaves of Origanum majorana L. (marjoram oil) for use in all animal species (FEFANA asbl).. Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of an essential oil from the leaves of Origanum majorana L. (marjoram oil) when used as a sensory additive in feed and in water for drinking for all animal species. The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) concluded that the use of marjoram oil is very unlikely to induce adverse effects in long-living and reproductive animals and is…

Effect of foliar application of biostimulants on the yield and quality of Greek oregano herb (Origa-num vulgare L. subsp. hirtum (Link.) Ietswaart). The field experiment was carried out on a private farm in Trębanów, Świętokrzyskie Province, in 2020–2022. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected biopreparations on the morphological traits of plants, the size and structure of yields, and the content and yield of Greek oregano essential oil. Natural biostimulants Stimplex (2 dm3 ha–1), Tecamin Max (1.5 dm3 ha–1), and Kendal (1 dm3 ha–1) were used in the study. The results demonstrated positive effects of the foliar application of the biostimulants on the morphological, per…

Genetic diversity and differentiation of two narrowly endemic Origanum species in Morocco: implications for conservation. Oregano is a highly valued aromatic and medicinal herb in the Mediterranean, appreciated for its ecological, medical, and culinary properties. This paper aims to explore genetic variation and population structure within O. elongatum and O. grosii populations across their natural range in Morocco by analyzing 13 microsatellites (SSRs). Despite the restricted habitat of O. elongatum, the level of genetic diversity in this species is rather high (Ho = 0.455; He = 0.429); however, O. grosii possesses a reduced level of genetic diversity (Ho = 0.285; He = 0.291) while demonst…

Oregano authenticity by multi-element ICP-OES profiling: detection of olive leaf adulteration supported by complementary fingerprinting.. Oregano ( Origanum vulgare ) is a high-value culinary herb that is vulnerable to economically motivated adulteration, particularly after drying and grinding when botanical identification becomes challenging. This study investigated oregano authenticity, and the quantitative detection of its adulteration with olive leaf ( Olea europaea ), using multi-element elemental profiling supported by complementary chemical fingerprinting. Elemental data obtained by ICP-OES (Ca, K, Fe, Mn, Mg, Na, and Zn) were first characterised across authentic oregano and olive le…

Coleus amboinicus is a species of semi-succulent perennial plant in the family Lamiaceae. It has a pungent oregano-like flavor and odor. Coleus amboinicus is considered to be native to parts of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and India, although it is widely cultivated and naturalized elsewhere in the tropics where it is used as a spice and ornamental plant. Common names in English include Indian borage, country borage, French thyme, Indian mint, Mexican mint, Cuban oregano, broad leaf thyme, soup mint, Spanish thyme. The species epithet, amboinicus refers to Ambon Island, in Indonesia. In 1747, 45 years after his death, a volume written by Georg Eberhard Rumphius was published, including th…
