Islam and Christianity are the two main religions practiced in Nigeria. The country is home to some of the world's largest Muslim and Christian populations, simultaneously. Nigeria is divided roughly in half with Muslims making up about 53% to 56% and Christians accounting for about 43% to 45% of the country's total population. The Christian share of Nigeria's population is currently in decline, due to a lower fertility rate relative to the Muslim population in the country. In 2020, Nigeria held the fifth largest Muslim population, and the sixth largest Christian population in the world. The majority of Nigerian Muslims are either Sunni Muslims and are members of Sufi brotherhoods or Tariqa…

Population Structure and Genetic Relationships among Nigerian Ethnic Groups (Ibibio, Igbo, Hausa, Tiv and Yoruba) Based on Nine Short Tandem Repeat Loci. Abstract The genetic relationships between populations can be detected with the use of genetic markers. This study investigated the genetic relationships between five Nigerian populations of Igbo, Ibibio, Yoruba, Tiv and Hausa origin using nine short tandem repeat markers. The nine loci and the sex-typing marker amelogenin were combined into multiplex assays and tested by PCR followed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis on 50 individuals per population. The study revealed that four (4) of the nine (9) loci had F ST values between 0.001 a…

Variation of Prenatal Ultrasound-Estimated Cephalic Index; A Comparative Study of Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba Ethnic Groups in Nigeria.

Background: Fetal ultrasound-estimated cephalic index refers to the ratio of the fetal biparietal diameter (BPD) to the occipito-frontal diameter (OFD) by means of ultrasound estimation. The cephalic index is regarded as a useful anthropometric variable in medicine, forensic science and anthropology. There is limited data on the cephalic indices of Nigerian fetuses
Objective: To check for variations of prenatal ultrasound-estimated cephalic indices between fetuses of Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa ancestry.
 Methodology: In a cross…

The following article lists sovereign states, dependent territories and some quasi-states according to their proportional ethnic population composition. Ethnic classifications vary from country to country and are therefore not comparable across countries. While some countries make classifications based on broad ancestry groups or characteristics such as skin color (e.g., the white ethnic category in the United States and some other countries), other countries use various ethnic, cultural, linguistic, or religious factors for classification. Ethnic groups may be subdivided into subgroups, which may or may not be identified as independent ethnic groups in their own right, depending on the sou…

The following is a list of contemporary ethnic groups of Africa. There has been constant debate over the classification of ethnic groups. Membership of an ethnic group tends to be associated with shared ancestry, history, homeland, language or dialect and cultural heritage; where the term "culture" specifically includes aspects such as religion, mythology and ritual, cuisine, dressing (clothing) style, and other factors. By the nature of the concept, ethnic groups tend to be divided into subgroups, may themselves be or not be identified as independent ethnic groups depending on the source consulted. Africa here is considered to be approximately delimited from South America by the South Atla…
