Food in England is a 1954 book by the social historian Dorothy Hartley. It is both a cookery book and a history of English cuisine. It was acclaimed on publication; the contemporary critic Harold Nicolson described the book as a classic. It has remained in print ever since. The book provides what has been called an idiosyncratic and a combative take on the history of English cooking. The book is unusual as a history in not citing its sources, serving more as an oral social history from Hartley's own experiences as she travelled England as a journalist for the Daily Sketch, interviewing "the last generation to have had countryside lives sharing something in common with the Tudors." Elizabeth David (née Gwynne, 26 December 1913 – 22 May 1992) was a British cookery writer. In the mid-20th century she strongly influenced the revitalisation of home cookery in her native country and beyond with articles and books about European cuisines and traditional British dishes. Born to an upper-class family, David rebelled against social norms of the day. In the 1930s she studied art in Paris, became an actress, and ran off with a married man with whom she sailed in a small boat to Italy, where their boat was confiscated. They reached Greece, where they were nearly trapped by the German invasion in 1941, but escaped to Egypt, where they parted. She then worked for the British govern…

World history in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle: its sources and its separateness from the Old English Orosius. Although a great deal has been written about the sources and manner of compilation of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in its various versions, very little attention has been paid to its earliest section – the annals covering the period from the landing of Julius Caesar, s.a. 60 BC, to the coming of Hengest and Horsa, s.a. 449. Eight of these annals deal with the history of Britain and derive their material from the chronological summary at the end of Bede's Historia Ecclesiastical . The remaining twenty-four (1–45 and 62–155) deal with world history, and the origin of their informatio…

‘She Must Have Cherries’: Food, Reproduction and Political Cultivation in Early Modern England. Abstract In early modern England, reproductive care and the management of pregnancy formed a shared culture of practical knowledge in which everyday foods served simultaneous medicinal, nutritional and social functions. Within this framework, specific provisions, most notably cherries and sweet preserves, carried culturally legible therapeutic associations regarding the physical formation of the child and the health of the pregnant or postpartum body. While scholars have established that the circulation of food and medical knowledge built trust within economies of obligation, the distinct politic…
