Offshore geotechnical engineering is a sub-field of geotechnical engineering. It is concerned with foundation design, construction, maintenance and decommissioning for human-made structures in the sea. Oil platforms, artificial islands and submarine pipelines are examples of such structures. The seabed has to be able to withstand the weight of these structures and the applied loads. Geohazards must also be taken into account. The need for offshore developments stems from a gradual depletion of hydrocarbon reserves onshore or near the coastlines, as new fields are being developed at greater distances offshore and in deeper water, with a corresponding adaptation of the offshore site investiga…

Record-Breaking Water Depth For Fixed Concrete Platforms. ABSTRACT This paper describes the special design and construction aspects of the TROLL Gravity Base Structure (GBS), When installed in 1995 this platform will be the world's tallest offshore concrete structure, situated in the North Sea in a waterdepth of 300 m or 1000 feet, The paper describes design chllenges such as the ringing waveloading phenomenon as well as novel features, such as flexjoint connection to topside and large scale prefabrication. TROLL FIELD HISTORY The Troll gas field is located in 300 to 350 meter water in the northern part of the North Sea, some 80 km northeast of Bergen. The Troll gas reservoir, which was dis…

Installation of a Production Manifold in 2000 ft Water Depth Offshore Brazil. Abstract This paper describes the installation and related analyses of a subsea production manifold in 620 meters water depth at Campos basin, offshore Brazil. A pre-installed mooring system was used to moor the crane barge which lowered the structure. Time domain and frequency domain computer programs were used to evaluate the response of the system A sensitivity study was conducted in order to assess the added mass, damping, stiffness and excitation forces influences on the system response and the importance of such parameters in the computer model calibration is discussed. Model tests were performed in order to…
