Cave bear occupation in Schwabenreith Cave, Austria, during the early last glacial: constraints from 230Th/U‐dated speleothems. ABSTRACT The cave bear was a prominent member of the Upper Pleistocene fauna in Eurasia. While breakthroughs were recently achieved with respect to its phylogeny using ancient DNA techniques, it is still challenging to date cave bear fossils beyond the radiocarbon age range. Without an accurate and precise chronological framework, however, key questions regarding the palaeoecology cannot be addressed, such as the extent to which large climate swings during the last glacial affected the habitat and possibly even conditioned the final extinction of this ma…

A COMPREHENSIVE CHARACTERISTIC OF 222Rn ACTIVITY CONCENTRATION CHANGES AND IONISING RADIATION EXPOSURE IN NEWLY DISCOVERED PARTS OF BEAR CAVE IN KLETNO, POLAND. Abstract The article presents the results of research into 222Rn activity concentration changes and ionising radiation exposure in newly discovered parts of Bear Cave in Kletno, unknown until 2012. 222Rn activity concentration was registered at three measurement points located inside over 500-m-long newly discovered cave passages. The air in these parts of the cave is characterised by a stable temperature of about 5°C and a relative humidity of 100%. The measurements started in September 2013 and were completed by mid-July 2016. The…

Diversity of Species and Susceptibility Phenotypes toward Commercially Available Fungicides of Cultivable Fungi Colonizing Bones of Ursus spelaeus on Display in Niedźwiedzia Cave (Kletno, Poland). Underground ecosystems are one of the most inhospitable places for microorganism development and function. Therefore, any organic matter located in these areas can stimulate fungal growth. The main purpose of this study was to find the best solution to effectively preserve (without relapses) paleolithic bones of cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) exhibited in cave without any negative influence on the cave environment. To achieve this aim, unambiguous identification of fungal species and its susceptibilit…
