Radon dynamics and effective dose estimation in a volcanic cave: La Cueva del Viento, Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). La Cueva del Viento is a volcanic lava tube located in Tenerife Island (Canary Islands, Spain). With 18.2 km in length, it is the 6 th longest volcanic tube on Earth. Its touristic section, 180 m long, receives more than 28,200 visitants each year. According to the European and Spanish legislation, a radon monitoring program is required to minimise the radon exposition of workers, tourists, and cavers. In this work, we studied the radon concentration dynamics in the touristic section of the cave for ca. 1 year, using both passive and active radon detectors. Pluviometry and…

Cueva del Viento ("Wind Cave") is the largest lava tube system in Europe, and the sixth largest in the world, behind a series of lava tubes in Hawaii. It is also considered the most complex volcanic tube in the world, due to its morphology of several levels and passages. It was created by lava flows from Pico Viejo, next to Mount Teide. The cave is located in the town of Icod de los Vinos in the north of the island of Tenerife, Spain. It extends more than 17 kilometres (11 mi) and contains three different levels of passageways, each full of geomorphological phenomena such as lava pits and terraces. The cave is rich in fossils of the "Canarian megafauna". Bones of Gallotia goliath and Canari…

Radon Dynamics and Effective Dose Estimation in a Touristic Volcanic Cave: <i>La Cueva del Viento</i>, Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). Abstract La Cueva del Viento is a volcanic lava tube located in Tenerife Island (Canary Islands, Spain). Its touristic section, 180 m long, receives more than 28,200 visitants each year. According to the European and Spanish legislation, a radon monitoring program is required to minimize the radon exposition of workers, tourists, and cavers. Radon monitoring in a volcanic cave: El Viento Cave (Canary Islands, Spain). <p>Radon (222Rn, t 1/2 = 3.82 days) is by far the dominant radionuclide in indoor air and constitutes a health hazard in poorly ventilated environments, such as caves, mines or tunnels. In these contexts, radon gas can accumulate, reaching harmful concentrations due to the ionizing radiation from 222Rn and its progeny. To minimize the exposure risk, a radon monitoring program is required to adopt mitigation measures for the radiological protection of workers, cavers and visitors. The Directive 2013/59/EURATOM sets the recommended occupational and public effective dose limits being 2…

Biodiversity in the Cueva del Viento Lava Tube System (Tenerife, Canary Islands). Cueva del Viento and Cueva de Felipe Reventón are lava tubes located in Tenerife, Canary Islands, and are considered the volcanic caves with the greatest cave-dwelling diversity in the world. Geological aspects of the island relevant to the formation of these caves are discussed, and their most outstanding internal geomorphological structures are described. An analysis of the environmental parameters relevant to animal communities is made, and an updated list of the cave-adapted species and their way of life into the caves is provided. Some paleontological data and comments on the conservation status of these…

Tenerife ( TEN-ə-REEF-(ay); Spanish: [teneˈɾife] ; formerly spelled Teneriffe) is the largest and most-populous island of the Canary Islands, an autonomous community of Spain, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwestern coast of Africa. With an area of 2,034.38 km2 (785.48 sq mi) and a population of 972,018 in 2026, it is the largest island in Macaronesia, and the most populous island in both Macaronesia and Spain. Tenerife is dominated by Teide, a volcanic peak that is the highest mountain in Spain and the highest point in the Atlantic islands. The island was inhabited by the Indigenous Guanche people before its incorporation into the Crown of Castile in 1496. Today, Tenerife is the…
