Natural carbon cycle processes on Earth, mostly absorption by the ocean, can remove only a small part of this, and terrestrial vegetation loss due to deforestation, land degradation and desertification further compounds this deficiency.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
A fossil fuel is a flammable carbon compound- or hydrocarbon-containing material formed naturally in the Earth's crust from the buried remains of prehistoric organisms (animals, plants or microplanktons), a process that occurs within geological formations. Reservoirs of such compound mixtures, such as coal, petroleum and natural gas, can be extracted and burnt as fuel for human consumption to provide energy for direct use (such as for cooking, heating or lighting), to power heat engines (such as steam or internal combustion engines) that can propel vehicles, or to generate electricity via steam turbine generators. Some fossil fuels are further refined into derivatives such as kerosene, gasoline and diesel, or converted into petrochemicals such as polyolefins (plastics), aromatics and synthetic resins. The origin of fossil fuels is the anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. The conversion from these organic materials to high-carbon fossil fuels is typically the result of a geological process of millions of years. Due to the length of time it takes for them to form, fossil fuels are considered non-renewable resources. In 2023, 77% of primary energy consumption in the worl…

A carbon sink is a natural or artificial carbon sequestration process that "removes a greenhouse gas, an aerosol or a precursor of a greenhouse gas from the atmosphere". These sinks form an important part of the natural carbon cycle. An overarching term is carbon pool, which is all the places where carbon on Earth can be, i.e. the atmosphere, oceans, soil, florae, fossil fuel reservoirs and so forth. A carbon sink is a type of carbon pool that has the capability to take up more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases. Globally, the two most important carbon sinks are vegetation and the ocean. Soil is an important carbon storage medium. Much of the organic carbon retained in the soil of…

In the atmosphere of Earth, carbon dioxide (CO2) is a trace gas that plays an integral part in the greenhouse effect, carbon cycle, photosynthesis, and oceanic carbon cycle. It is one of three main greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of Earth. In 2026, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached 432 ppm or 0.0432% (on a molar basis), representing a mass of 3380 gigatonnes. This is an increase of 54% since the start of the Industrial Revolution, up from 280 ppm during the 10,000 years prior to the mid-18th century. The increase is due to human activity. The current increase in CO2 concentrations is primarily driven by the burning of fossil fuels. Other significant human acti…

The carbon cycle is a part of the biogeochemical cycle where carbon is exchanged among the biosphere, pedosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere of Earth. Other major biogeochemical cycles include the nitrogen cycle and the water cycle. Carbon is the main component of biological compounds as well as a major component of many rocks such as limestone. The carbon cycle comprises a sequence of events that are key to making Earth capable of sustaining life. It describes the movement of carbon as it is recycled and reused throughout the biosphere, as well as long-term processes of carbon sequestration (storage) to and release from carbon sinks. At 422.7 parts per million (ppm), the global…

The oceanic carbon cycle (or marine carbon cycle) is composed of processes that exchange carbon between various pools within the ocean as well as between the atmosphere, Earth interior, and the seafloor. The carbon cycle is a result of many interacting forces across multiple time and space scales that circulates carbon around the planet, ensuring that carbon is available globally. The Oceanic carbon cycle is a central process to the global carbon cycle and contains both inorganic carbon (carbon not bound to other carbon) and organic carbon (carbon that is incorporated into molecules with carbon-carbon bonds). Part of the marine carbon cycle transforms carbon between non-living and living ma…

Present-day climate change includes both global warming—the ongoing increase in global average temperature—and its wider effects on Earth's climate system. In a broader sense, climate change also includes previous long-term changes to Earth's climate. The modern-day rise in global temperatures is driven by human activities, especially fossil fuel (coal, oil and natural gas) burning since the Industrial Revolution. Fossil fuel use, deforestation, and some agricultural and industrial practices release greenhouse gases. These gases absorb some of the heat that the Earth radiates after it warms from sunlight, warming the lower atmosphere. Earth's atmosphere now has roughly 50% more carbon dioxi…

The Earth’s natural carbon cycle – Carbon reservoir ocean: How the sea absorbs carbon dioxide. In the past decades, the world ocean has absorbed around 25 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions caused by humans, thus significantly slowing down climate change. Mankind could boost this natural climate service of the ocean by increasing its carbon uptake in a variety of ways.

Carbon dioxide is a chemical compound with the chemical formula CO2. It is made up of molecules that each have one carbon atom covalently double bonded to two oxygen atoms. It is found in a gas state at room temperature and at normally-encountered concentrations it is odorless. As the source of carbon in the carbon cycle, atmospheric CO2 is the primary carbon source for life on Earth. In the air, carbon dioxide is transparent to visible light but absorbs infrared radiation, acting as a greenhouse gas. Carbon dioxide is soluble in water and is found in groundwater, lakes, ice caps, and seawater. It is a trace gas in Earth's atmosphere at 428 parts per million (ppm), or about 0.043% (as of Ju…

Carbon allocation strategy of Thalassiosira weissflogii in response to elevated pCO2.. Diatoms are of significance in the marine ecosystem, playing a pivotal role in the sustenance of marine life and the transfer of carbon from the surface ocean to deeper waters. Although numerous studies have investigated the effects of elevated carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) on marine diatoms across both short- and long-term adaptation scales, the molecular mechanisms governing chitin metabolism in response to ocean acidification remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed an integrated approach combining transcriptomic, metabolomic, and physiological analyses to examine the marine…

Carbon Nanotube-Based Multi-Functional "Yin"-"Yang" Film: Dual Applications in Solar Water Evaporation and Blue Energy Harvesting.. The ocean abounds with a wide variety of energy sources and resources. To achieve more efficient exploitation of these, it is of great significance to design and prepare multifunctional composite materials capable of collecting and utilizing ocean energy and resources. Inspired by the complementary "Yin"-"Yang" philosophy in traditional Chinese thought, this paper designed and fabricated a multi-functional "Yin"-"Yang" film (silk fiber-carbon nanotube (SC) film), based on carbon nanotubes and silk. The film, which features a distinct gradient structure, is cons…
