Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Turtle (also called American Turtle) was the world's first American submarine, or by modern standards a submersible, with a documented record of use in naval combat. The name came from it's inventor David Bushnell, who believed the craft resembled 'two upper shells of a Tortoise joined together'. In 1775, Yale college students David Bushnell and Phineas Pratt invented a bomb that was able to detonate underwater and could be moved on a manual submarine. Later that year Bushnell took the idea a step further, developing a submersible that could be used to attach explosive charges to the hull of a harboured ship for use against the Royal Navy during the American Revolutionary War. Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull recommended the invention to George Washington, who provided funds and support for the development and testing of the machine. Several attempts were made using Turtle to affix explosives to the undersides of British warships in New York Harbor in 1776. All failed, and her transport ship was sunk later that year by the British with the submarine aboard. Bushnell claimed eventually to have recovered the machine, but its final fate is unknown. Modern replicas of Turtle have been constructed and are on display in the Connecticut River Museum, the U.S. Navy's Submarine Force Library and Museum, the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, the International Spy Museum, and the Oceano…

The Shallow Water Combat Submersible (SWCS), also known as the Mark 11 SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV Mk 11), is a crewed, wet (free-flooding) submersible that serves as a swimmer delivery vehicle for special-operations missions by United States Navy SEALs. Designed to replace the Mark 8 SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV Mk 8) on a 1-to-1 basis, Teledyne was awarded a contract to deliver 10 units for a cost of $179 million. The first two ships were delivered in 2018, with the last units planned for delivery in 2022. The SWCS will serve alongside the pressurized Dry Combat Submersible (DCS), a midget submarine developed by Lockheed Martin to replace the cancelled Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS).

The Dry Combat Submersible (DCS) is a midget submarine delivered to USSOCOM by Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin were nominated as the prime contractor with Submergence Group as the sub contractor. DCS is designed for use by the United States Navy SEALs for insertion on special operations missions. It will replace the canceled Advanced SEAL Delivery System and will serve alongside the Shallow Water Combat Submersible. As the name suggests, the Dry Combat Submersible has a dry interior, enabling longer mission durations in colder water. The DCS is designated the S351 Nemesis. Lockheed Martin and the Submergence Group were awarded the $166 million, 5-year contract to develop and build three DC…

First photon-counting detector computed tomography in the living crocodile: a 3D-Imaging study with special reference to amphibious hearing.. Background Crocodiles are semi-aquatic animals well adapted to hear both on land and under water. Currently, there is limited information on how their amphibious hearing is accomplished. Here, we describe, for the first time, the ear anatomy in the living crocodile using photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) and 3D rendering. We speculate on how crocodiles, despite their closed ear canals, can use tympanic hearing in water that also provides directional hearing. Material and methods A Cuban crocodile ( Crocodylus rhombifer) underwent p…

New occurrences of the bone-eating worm Osedax from Late Cretaceous marine reptiles and implications for its biogeography and diversification.. The bone-eating worm Osedax is a speciose and globally distributed clade, primarily found on whale carcasses in marine environments. The earliest fossil evidence for Osedax borings was previously described in plesiosaur and sea turtle bones from the mid-Cretaceous of the United Kingdom, representing the only unequivocal pre-Oligocene occurrences. Confirming through CT scanning, we present new evidence of Osedax borings in three plesiosaur specimens and, for the first time, identify borings in two mosasaur specimens. All specimens…
