The cat (Felis catus), also called domestic cat and house cat, is a small domesticated carnivorous mammal. It is a member of Felidae, the family of mammals in the order Carnivora also colloquially referred to as cats. An obligate carnivore requiring a predominantly meat-based diet, it has retractable claws adapted to killing small prey species such as mice and rats. It has a strong, flexible body, quick reflexes, and sharp teeth, and its night vision and sense of smell are well developed. It is a social species, but a solitary hunter and a crepuscular predator. Cat communication includes meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, grunting, body language, and scent marking. It can hear s…

The domestication of the cat can be traced back to Near Eastern and Egyptian populations of the African wildcat, Felis lybica, from which emerged the domestic cat (F. catus). Both belong to the Felis lineage of the family Felidae, which is thought to have first diversified around 13 to 12 million years ago. Several investigations have shown that all domestic varieties of cats come from a single lineage of F. lybica, although early interactions between wildcats and Neolithic human settlements occurred across a broad geographic range. Originating in the Near East, the first domestic cats spread from the ancient Mediterranean world via maritime trade as well as the Silk Road, and later worldwi…

Cell Cycle Synchronization of Skin Fibroblast Cells in Four Species of Family Felidae. Contents This study was examined whether the species of felid affects synchronization accuracy at the G0/G1 stage of the cell cycle and the occurrence of apoptosis by different protocols, such as serum starvation, confluent and roscovitine treatment. Skin fibroblast cells were obtained from the Asian golden cat, marbled cat, leopard and Siamese cat. The cells from each animal were treated with either serum starvation for 1–5 days, cell confluency‐contact inhibition for 5 days or roscovitine at various concentrations (7.5–30 μ m ). Flow cytometric analysis revealed that serum starvation for 3 days provided…

Felidae ( FEE-lə-dee) is the family of mammals in the order Carnivora commonly referred to as cats. A member of this family is also called a felid ( FEE-lid, -ləd). The 41 officially recognized extant Felidae species exhibit the greatest diversity in fur patterns of all terrestrial carnivores. Cats have retractile claws, slender muscular bodies and strong flexible forelimbs. Their teeth and facial muscles allow for a powerful bite. They are all obligate carnivores, and most are solitary predators ambushing or stalking their prey. Some wild cat species are adapted to forest and savanna habitats, some to arid environments, and a few also to wetlands and mountainous terrain. Their activity pa…

Assessment of spatial and temporal overlap between wildcats (<i>Felis silvestris</i>) and domestic cats (<i>Felis catus</i>) in northeastern Iberia.. Presence of domestic species can cause multiple impacts on natural ecosystems, especially when wild close relatives are also present. The European Wildcat is an excellent example, facing major conservation threats due to the presence of domestic cats in natural environments. Their interactions can result in varying levels of hybridization, disease transmission, and ecological competition across different regions. Here, we studied spatiotemporal overlap of both species using over 300 camera traps located in more than 30…

Descriptive comparative morphology of the eye and ocular adnexa in Felidae: observations from a clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), African lion (Panthera leo), and Pallas's cat (Otocolobus manul).. BACKGROUND: The Felidae family includes diverse species with marked variation in ocular morphology. This study describes and qualitatively compares ocular morphology in a limited number of specimens: the clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa, n = 1), the African lion (Panthera leo, including two Angola lions, P. l. bleyenberghi, n = 2), and Pallas’s cat (Otocolobus manul, including O. m. manul, n = 1), whereas morphometric assessment of the orbital region was additionally based on skull material (…

Copy-cat evolution: Divergence and convergence within and between cat and dog breeds.. Many domesticated species exhibit remarkable phenotypic diversity. In nature, selection produces not only divergence but also convergence when organisms experience similar selective pressures. Whether artificial selection during domestication also produces convergence has received little attention. Three-dimensional shape analysis of domestic cat and dog skulls demonstrated convergence at multiple levels. Most broadly, cats and dogs have both diversified greatly: equaling or exceeding the morphological disparity among all modern-day species of their respective families. Moreover, as a result of artificial…
