A sexual fantasy, or erotic fantasy, is an autoerotic mental image or pattern of thought that stirs a person's sexuality and can create or enhance sexual arousal. A sexual fantasy can be created by the person's imagination or memory, and may be triggered autonomously or by external stimulation such as erotic literature or pornography, a physical object, or sexual attraction to another person. Anything that may give rise to sexual arousal may also produce a sexual fantasy, and sexual arousal may in turn give rise to fantasies. Sexual fantasies are nearly universal, being reported in many societies across the globe. However, because of the nature of some fantasies, the actual putting of such…

Masturbation is a form of autoeroticism in which a person sexually stimulates their own genitals for sexual arousal or other sexual pleasure, usually to the point of orgasm. In humans, this typically involves orgasm in both sexes and, in males, is often accompanied by ejaculation. Stimulation may involve the use of hands, everyday objects, sex toys, or more rarely, the mouth (autofellatio and autocunnilingus). Masturbation may also be performed with a sex partner, either masturbating together or watching the other partner masturbate, known as "mutual masturbation". Masturbation is frequent in both sexes. Various medical and psychological benefits have been attributed to a healthy attitude t…

Fantasy and Sexual Arousal in College Men: Normative and Functional Aspects. College freshmen completed personality and imaginal scales, and a fantasy questionnaire. Factor analysis of questionnaire data revealed four patterns of patently sexual and two forms of non-sexual fantasies, and linked sexual masturbatory fantasies to sexual activity. Functional aspects were examined by asking subjects to read a collection of erotic stories and photographs. One third then generated a private sexual fantasy, another third read erotic stories. A control group read non-erotic stories. Sexual arousal was assessed by a brief checklist. Results showed that self-generated fantasy increased arousal more th…

Memory distrust and imagination inflation: A registered report.. Imagination inflation occurs when the subjective confidence of a person that an event has occurred increases after they imagine it occurring. In this project, our primary aim was to test whether memory distrust is related to the imagination inflation effect in people who are aware of the discrepancies between their own memories and what they have imagined. Our secondary purpose was to investigate whether the influence of memory distrust on imagination inflation is moderated by traits that are described as disengagement from reality and to test whether memory distrust mediates the relationship between self-esteem and imaginatio…

Witnessing and imagination: Proust, trauma, and the expansion of consciousness.. I treat Proust's Á la Recherche du Temps Perdu as a fictional case history centered around dynamic tension between dissociation, memory, and creativity. I argue that three pivotal breakthroughs of long dissociated memories and feelings in Proust's novel result from thawing within a dyadically-determined dissociative process, not simply the chance triggering of involuntary memories as the narrator supposes. Dissociation and its thawing are states of consciousness guided by the same dynamics that enable witnessing to transcend dissociation in the context of trauma. Witnessing allows experience to "come alive." We…

Sigmund Freud (born Sigismund Schlomo Freud; 6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for evaluating and treating pathologies arising from conflicts in the psyche through dialogue between patient and psychoanalyst, and the distinctive theory of mind and human agency it posits. In creating psychoanalysis, Freud introduced therapeutic methods such as free association, the interpretation of dreams, and the analysis of transference phenomena that arise in the clinical setting. Freud's redefinition of sexuality to include infantile stages led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as a central tenet of psychoanalytical theory.…
