Reddit ( RED-it, stylized reddit) is a proprietary American social news website, news aggregator, forum and social media platform. Registered users (commonly referred to as "redditors") submit content to the site such as links, text posts, images, and videos, which are then voted up or down ("upvoted" or "downvoted") by other members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called "subreddits". Submissions with more upvotes appear towards the top of their subreddit and, if they receive enough upvotes, ultimately on the site's front page. Reddit administrators moderate the communities. Moderation is also conducted by subreddit-specific moderators, who are unpaid volunteers. It is operated by Reddit, Inc., based in San Francisco. Reddit is one of the most-visited websites. Approximately 10% of the company's revenue comes from licensing deals with Google and OpenAI, expiring in 2027, to license data to train models for artificial intelligence. The company's remaining revenue comes from internet advertising; a small portion comes from products sold directly to users. Reddit was founded by University of Virginia roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in June 2005, who were joined by Aaron Swartz that November. Condé Nast Publications acquired the site in October 2006. In 2011, Reddit became an independent subsidiary of Condé Nast's parent company, Advance Public…

In the context of news media and social media, an echo chamber is defined as an environment or ecosystem in which participants encounter beliefs that amplify or reinforce their preexisting beliefs, by communication and repetition inside a closed system and insulated from rebuttal. The echo chambers function by circulating existing views without encountering opposing views, potentially leading to three cognitive biases: correlation neglect, selection bias and confirmation bias. Echo chambers may increase social and political polarization and extremism. On social media, it is thought that echo chambers limit exposure to diverse perspectives, and also favor and reinforce presupposed narratives…

The Role of Influencers and Echo Chambers in the Diffusion of Vaccine Misinformation: Opinion Mining in a Taiwanese Online Community.. Background Prevalence and spread of misinformation are a concern for the exacerbation of vaccine hesitancy and a resulting reduction in vaccine intent. However, few studies have focused on how vaccine misinformation diffuses online, who is responsible for the diffusion, and the mechanisms by which that happens. In addition, researchers have rarely investigated this in non-Western contexts particularly vulnerable to misinformation. Objective This study aims to identify COVID-19 vaccine misinformation, map its diffusion, and identify the effect of echo chamber…

Algorithmic amplification describes increases in the distribution or visibility of content on digital platforms, arising from a combination of automated ranking by recommendation systems and users' own sharing. Definitions differ over the baseline used to determine whether content has been amplified, and separating the contribution of ranking from that of users is a recurring difficulty in the research. Major platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), use such systems to determine what appears in users' feeds and search results. The term is used in research on social media and digital media regulation to describe how platform design choices influence the distr…

On Reddit, a social news site, some communities (known as subreddits or subs) are centred around explicit, violent, propagandist, or hateful material. Many such subreddits have been the topic of controversy, at times receiving significant media coverage. Journalists, attorneys, media researchers, and others have commented that such communities shape and promote biased views of international politics, the veracity of evidence-based medicine, misogynistic rhetoric, and other socially disruptive concepts. Contrary to popular opinion as well as previous staff practices and statements, Reddit's founders have said they did not intend the platform to be a "bastion of free speech" where online hate…
