Pulp Fiction is a 1994 American crime film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino from a story he conceived with Roger Avary. It tells four intertwining tales of crime and violence in Los Angeles. The film stars John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Ving Rhames, and Uma Thurman. The title refers to the pulp magazines and hardboiled crime novels popular during the mid-twentieth century, known for their graphic violence and punchy dialogue. Tarantino wrote Pulp Fiction in 1992 and 1993, incorporating scenes that Avary originally wrote for True Romance (1993). Its plot occurs out of chronological order. The film features self-referential elements, monologues, casual conv…

The crime film is a genre where the element of crime is key to the film's plot. Researchers of the genre, such as Nicole Hahn Rafter and Thomas Leitch noted the difficulty in defining the genre, saying it would be impractical to call every film in which a crime produces the central dramatic situation. Various interpretations of the crime film include Carlos Clarens described the crime film as a symbolic representation of crime, law and society while Leitch said they present defining subjects as part of a culture which normalizes a place where crime is both shockingly disruptive and also completely normal, while Rafter said the films in the genre are ones that are defined by plots that focus…

Quentin Tarantino. An in-depth study of all Tarantino’s feature films to date (from Reservoir Dogs to The Hateful Eight ), Quentin Tarantino: A Poetics and Politics of Cinematic Metafiction argues that, far from wallowing in narcissism and solipsism, a charge directed not only at Tarantino but at metafiction in general, these self-conscious fictions do more than just reflexively foreground their status as artefacts; they offer metacommentaries that engage with the history of cultural representations and exalt the aesthetic, ethical and political potential of creation as re-recreation and resignification. By combining cultural studies and neo-formalist approaches, this book seeks to highligh…

Introduction. Is it even necessary to introduce Tarantino? Probably not. The biographies (Bernard 1995; Dawson 1995; Charyn 2006) and interview books (Peary 2013) all tell the same story: that of a young man, born in 1963 and raised by a strong, single mother named Connie, who went from working in a Los Angeles rental store called Video Archives to winning the Palme d’or for ...

Hardboiled fiction is a genre of crime fiction and detective fiction, similar in tone or mood to noir fiction, whose typical protagonist is a justice-seeking detective battling the violence of organized crime, while dealing with a legal system that has become as corrupt as the organized crime itself. Hardboiled works are largely set during Prohibition in the United States (1920–1933) or its aftermath, during a historical uptick in American organized crime. Rendered cynical by the cycle of violence, the detectives of hardboiled fiction are often antiheroes. Notable hardboiled detectives include Dick Tracy, Philip Marlowe, Nick Charles, Mike Hammer, Sam Spade, Lew Archer, Slam Bradley, Dan Tu…
