The Red Sea is a mediterranean sea lying between the Arabian Peninsula and Africa. It is an inlet of the Indian Ocean. Its connection to the ocean is in the south, through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden. To the north of the Red Sea lies the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Gulf of Suez, which leads to the Suez Canal. It is underlain by the Red Sea Rift, which is part of the Great Rift Valley. The Red Sea has a surface area of roughly 438,000 km2 (169,000 sq mi), is about 2,250 km (1,400 mi) long, and 355 km (221 mi) across at its widest point. It has an average depth of 490 m (1,610 ft), and in the central Suakin Trough, it reaches its maximum depth of 2,730 m (8,9…

About 40% of the Red Sea is quite shallow (up to 100 meters deep) and 25% is less than 50 meters deep. A rift valley runs through the middle of the bottom of the Red Sea - it is a deep cleft formed as a result of the stretching of the earth's crust. The bottom is the oceanic crust, which is made of basalt. In the place of the Red Sea Rift, Africa moves away from Asia (exactly the African plate from the Arabian plate) - the depth in this place exceeds 3000 meters. About 15% of the Red Sea is more than 1,000 meters deep.

The Blue Hole is a diving location on the southeast Sinai, a few kilometres north of Dahab, Egypt on the coast of the Gulf of Aqaba within the Red Sea. The Blue Hole is a blue hole, with a maximum depth within the hole of just over 100 m (330 ft). There is a shallow opening to the sea around 6 m (20 ft) deep, known as "the saddle", and a 26 m (85 ft) long tunnel, known as "the Arch", whose ceiling is at a depth of 55 m (180 ft) and whose bottom falls away as it reaches the seaward side to about 120 m (390 ft). On the seaward side the floor drops steeply to over 1,000 metres (3,300 ft). The hole and the surrounding area have an abundance of coral and reef fish. The Blue Hole is popular for f…

The Mediterranean Sea ( MED-ih-tə-RAY-nee-ən) is an intercontinental sea situated between Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is surrounded by the Mediterranean basin and almost completely enclosed by land: on the east by the Levant in West Asia, on the north by Anatolia in West Asia and Southern Europe, and on the south by North Africa. To its west it is connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the Strait of Gibraltar that separates the Iberian Peninsula in Europe from Morocco in Africa by only 14 km (9 mi); additionally, it is connected to the Black Sea through the Bosporus strait that intersects Turkey in the northeast and the Red Sea via the Suez Canal in the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea covers…

The Dead Sea (Arabic: اَلْبَحْر الْمَيِّت, romanized: al-Baḥr al-Mayyit; or اَلْبَحْر الْمَيْت, al-Baḥr al-Mayt; Hebrew: יַם הַמֶּלַח, romanized: Yam hamMelaḥ), also known by other names, is a landlocked salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east, the West Bank to the west and Israel to the southwest. It lies in the endorheic basin of the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River. As of 2025, the lake's surface is 439.78 metres (1,443 ft) below sea level, making its shores the lowest land-based elevation on Earth. It is 304 m (997 ft) deep, which makes it the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With a salinity of 342 g/kg, or 34.2% (in 2011), it is one of the world's s…

Deeper than we thought: New depth records for northern Red Sea and eastern Mediterranean Sea fishes. The depth distribution of marine species is essential ecological information, especially within hotspots of biological invasions and given the increasing evidence of climate-driven depth shifts. Due to the scarcity of systematic surveys across depths, most studies rely on coarse-scale compilations of opportunistic data. High-quality depth estimates are particularly lacking in the eastern Mediterranean, a global hotspot of climate change and biological invasions, and the adjacent Red Sea, which serves as the source for most species introductions. Using baited remote underwater stereo-video sy…

The black guillemot or tystie (Cepphus grylle) is a medium-sized seabird of the Alcidae family, native throughout northern Atlantic coasts and eastern North American coasts. It is resident in much of its range, but large populations from the high arctic migrate southwards in winter. The bird can be seen in and around its breeding habitat of rocky shores, cliffs and islands in single or smalls groups of pairs. They feed mainly by diving towards the sea floor feeding on fish, crustaceans or other benthic invertebrates. They are listed on the IUCN red list as a species of least concern. Both sexes have very similar appearances with black plumage and a large white patch on the upper side of the…

The Bohai Sea (Chinese: 渤海; pinyin: Bó Hǎi; Zhuyin Fuhao: ㄅㄛˊ ㄏㄞˇ; lit. 'Bo Sea') is a gulf/inland sea approximately 77,000 km2 (30,000 sq mi) in area on the east coast of Mainland China. It is the northwestern and innermost extension of the Yellow Sea, to which it connects via the Bohai Strait. It has a mean depth of approximately 18 meters (59 ft), with a maximum depth of about 80 meters (260 ft) located in the northern part of the Bohai Strait. The Bohai Sea is enclosed by three provinces and one direct-administered municipality from three different regions of China—Liaoning Province (of Northeast China), Hebei Province and Tianjin Municipality (of North China), and Shandong Province (of…

Basking sharks overlap with primary and secondary deep scattering layers during overwintering migration in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.. Long-distance migrations allow animals to exploit seasonal prey opportunities and track favorable oceanographic conditions. The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is a large, filter-feeding elasmobranch commonly observed in temperate shelf habitats, though it is known to seasonally occupy warmer, lower-latitude regions. In the Northwest Atlantic Ocean, basking sharks migrate from summer habitats on the continental shelf of the northeastern United States and Canada to the tropical waters of the Caribbean and South America during winter. However, the functi…
