Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Hunting is the human practice of seeking, pursuing, capturing, and/or killing wildlife or feral animals. The most common reasons for humans to hunt are to obtain the animal's body to consume their meat and useful animal products (fur/hide, bone/tusks, horn/antler, etc.), for recreation/taxidermy (see trophy hunting), although it may also be done for other purposes such as removing predators dangerous to humans or domestic animals (e.g. wolf hunting), to eliminate pests and nuisance animals that damage crops/livestock/poultry or spread diseases (see varminting), for trade/tourism (see safari), or for ecological conservation against overpopulation and invasive species (commonly called a cull). Recreationally hunted species are generally referred to as the game, and are usually mammals and birds. A person participating in a hunt is a hunter or huntress; a natural area used for hunting is called a game reserve or hunting range; and an experienced hunter who helps organise a hunt and/or manage the game reserve is also known as a gamekeeper. Hunting activities by humans arose in Homo erectus or earlier, in the order of millions of years ago. Hunting has become deeply embedded in various human cultures and was once an important part of rural economies—classified by economists as part of primary production alongside forestry, agriculture, and fishery. Modern regulations (see game law)…

Wildlife management is the management process influencing interactions among and between wildlife, its habitats and people to achieve predefined impacts. Wildlife management can include wildlife conservation, population control, gamekeeping, wildlife contraceptive and pest control. Wildlife management aims to halt the loss in the Earth's biodiversity, by taking into consideration ecological principles such as carrying capacity, disturbance and succession, and environmental conditions such as physical geography, pedology and hydrology. Most wildlife biologists are concerned with the conservation and improvement of habitats; although rewilding is increasingly being undertaken. Techniques can…

A hunting season is the designated time period during which wild animals can be legally hunted in designated areas, typically issued by the formal game law of a sovereign state, which specifies the calendar dates, the time of the day and bag limits of the target animal allowed for hunting, and such rules are often enforced by conservation officers. The permitted dates within the hunting season are referred to as open season, while other unpermitted dates outside the designated hunting season are called closed season. Hunting during closed season are considered poaching and thus wrongful, and might be subjected to punishments ranging from fines to criminal sentencing. Hunting seasons exist p…

Mitigating Human-Wild Boar Conflicts: A Review of Integrated Strategies and Future Directions.. Wild boar populations have expanded globally due to factors such as habitat restoration, climate change, and adjustments in hunting policies. This expansion has led to agricultural losses, threats to public safety, disease transmission, and ecological damage, thereby exacerbating human-animal conflicts. Current strategies for mitigating conflicts between wild boars and humans face challenges, including insufficient assessment of long-term control effects and limitations in population dynamics monitoring technologies. This paper reviews mitigation strategies for global wild boar conflicts from eco…

A hunting license or hunting permit is a regulatory or legal mechanism to control hunting, both commercial and recreational. A license specifically made for recreational (game) hunting is sometimes called a game license or game permit. Hunting activities beyond the permission of such licensing are typically regarded as poaching and thus wrongful or criminal. Hunting may be regulated formally via game laws issued by a legislature or government agency, or informally by unwritten conventions, self-restraint ethics or moral code among the hunter community. The purposes for requiring hunting licenses include natural resource management, conservation of vulnerable/endangered species and raising t…

Adaptive Management of Protected Wildlife Populations in Poland: Environmental Sustainability and Conservation Challenges of European Bison (<i>Bison bonasus</i>), Eurasian Beaver (<i>Castor fiber</i>), and Eurasian Moose (<i>Alces alces</i>).. Populations of European bison ( Bison bonasus ), Eurasian beaver ( Castor fiber ), and Eurasian moose ( Alces alces ) in Poland are currently experiencing significant growth. These species are subject to strict legal protection or specific regulatory frameworks. The purpose of the study is to analyze Polish legislation concerning the protection of selected species and to identify legislative actions that could ensu…

Hunting is a significant subsistence and recreational activity in the United States. Regulation of hunting began in the 19th century. Some modern hunters see themselves as conservationists. American hunting tradition values fair chase, which values the balance between the hunter and the animals. A 2006 poll showed that 78% of Americans support hunting. 6% of Americans have hunted. Hunting is most popular in the Midwest. Nearly $200 million in hunters' federal excise taxes are distributed to support wildlife management program, hunter education, and safety classes. Many hunting groups participate in lobbying the federal and state governments. Regulations vary widely from state to state.

Acorn Availability Reduces Agricultural Damage by Ungulates.. Human-wildlife conflicts, particularly the damage to agricultural crops caused by ungulates, pose significant ecological and economic challenges. Understanding the role of natural food availability in driving these conflicts is important for developing effective management strategies. We investigated how the pulsed availability of forest tree seeds, i.e., mast seeding, influences the extent of agricultural crop damage in Poland. Using a 19-year national dataset (2001-2020), we analyzed the relationship between oak ( Quercus spp.) and European beech ( Fagus sylvatica ) seed production, the abundance of wild boar ( Sus scrofa ) and…

Biocultural Ethnoecology of <i>Nasua narica</i> (Procyonidae, Mammalia) in Northeastern Oaxaca, México.. Oaxaca is one of the most biocultural diverse regions in Mexico. Although the white-nosed coati ( Nasua narica L.; Procyonidae, Mammalia) is widely used by Indigenous and rural communities throughout the Neotropics, its role within subsistence hunting, traditional food systems, and local management practices in Oaxaca has remained undocumented. This study analyzes the biocultural significance of N. narica hunting and consumption among four Indigenous groups in northern Oaxaca. Data were collected through ethnographic techniques, i.e., semi-structured interviews with locals, e…

Trophy hunting is a form of hunting for sport in which parts of the hunted wild animals are kept and displayed as trophies. The animal being targeted, known as the "game", is typically a mature male specimen from a popular species of collectable interests, usually of large sizes, holding impressive horns, antlers, furs, or manes. Most trophies consist of only select parts of the animal, which are prepared for display by a taxidermist. The parts most commonly kept vary by species but often include the head, hide, tusks, horns, or antlers. Trophies are often displayed in trophy rooms or game rooms, or in gun rooms along with the hunter's gun collection. Trophy hunting has strong supporters an…

The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is a set of principles that has guided wildlife management and conservation decisions in the United States and Canada. Although not formally articulated until 2001, the model has its origins in 19th century conservation movements, the near extinction of several species of wildlife (including the American bison) and the rise of sportsmen with the middle class. Beginning in the 1860s sportsmen began to organize and advocate for the preservation of wilderness areas and wildlife. The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation rests on two basic principles – fish and wildlife are for the non-commercial use of citizens, and should be managed su…
