Wolves and Wolfdog-hybrids. This thesis focuses on interspecies crossbreeding of wolves with other canids, especially dogs. The canids can mate and produce a fertile offspring. If the local conditions and etological barriers do not hinder, the hybrids in this area can spread out and endanger the original wolf population, especially when an introgression into the wolf population appears. The Red wolf is especially threatened by mating with coyotes and the Ethiopian wolf especially threatened by mating with domesticated dogs. The process of cross-breeding took place previously in the early days of domestication. This is not surprising, because dogs of this time and wolves were not morphologic…

Hybrid aversion: wolves, dogs, and the humans who love to keep them apart. Wolves are, for many people, the living embodiment of wildness. Dogs, on the other hand, are the nonhuman animal we have most closely adopted as one of our own: man’s best friend, the apogee of domestication. And yet, the two creatures can and do mate and have fertile offspring. The wolf’s scientific name is Canis lupus. The dog’s scientific name is Canis lupus familiaris. That is to say: they are the same species.. Source: Routledge eBooks. Year: 2017

The wolf (Canis lupus; pl.: wolves), also known as the grey wolf or gray wolf, is a canine native to Eurasia and North America. More than thirty subspecies of Canis lupus have been recognized, including the dog and dingo, though grey wolves, as popularly understood, include only naturally occurring wild subspecies. The wolf is the largest wild extant member of the family Canidae, and is further distinguished from other Canis species by its less pointed ears and muzzle, as well as a shorter torso and a longer tail. The wolf is nonetheless related closely enough to smaller Canis species, such as the coyote and the golden jackal, to produce fertile hybrids with them. The wolf's fur is usually…

Domestic Dog Scent Marks Trigger a Behavioural Response in Wild Wolves.. The European grey wolf ( Canis lupus ) and domestic dog ( Canis lupus familiaris ) share not only a common origin but also many similarities in behaviour. Due to the introduction of legal protection, wolves have recolonised large parts of Europe. They are increasingly inhabiting human-dominated landscapes, leading to a growing potential for interactions between wolves and domestic dogs. However, these interactions between wolves and dogs are still poorly understood. Scent marking is one of the main forms of communication in canids and is crucial for marking territories, synchronising reproduction, establishing hierarch…

The Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes viverrinus), also called the tanuki, is a species of canid that is endemic to Japan. It is one of two species in the genus Nyctereutes, alongside the common raccoon dog (N. procyonoides), of which it is considered to be a subspecies by some taxonomic authorities. In Japan, raccoon dogs have had a prominent role in folklore since ancient times. They are reputedly mischievous and jolly, masters of disguise and shapeshifting, but somewhat gullible and absent-minded. The animals are common in Japanese art, particularly as statues.

A coydog is a canid hybrid resulting from a mating between a male coyote and a female dog. Hybrids of both sexes are fertile and can be successfully bred through four generations. Similarly, a dogote/doyote is a hybrid with a dog father and a coyote mother. Such matings occurred long before the European colonization of the Americas, as melanistic coyotes have been shown to have inherited their black pelts from dogs likely brought to North America through the Bering Land Bridge 12,000 to 14,000 years ago by the ancestors of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Coydogs were deliberately bred in Pre-Columbian Mexico, where coyotes were held in high regard. In the city of Teotihuacan, it was…

The golden jackal (Canis aureus), also called the common jackal, is a wolf-like canid that is native to Eurasia. The golden jackal's coat varies in color from a pale creamy yellow in summer to a dark tawny beige in winter. It is smaller and has shorter legs, a shorter tail, a more elongated torso, a less-prominent forehead, and a narrower and more pointed muzzle than the Arabian wolf. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its widespread distribution and high density in areas with plenty of available food and optimum shelter. Despite its name, the golden jackal is not closely related to the African black-backed jackal or the side-striped jackal, which are part of the genu…
