Community Notes (formerly known as Birdwatch) is a feature on X (formerly Twitter) where contributors can add context such as fact-checks under a post, image or video. It is a community-driven content moderation program, intended to provide helpful and informative context, based on a crowd-sourced system. Notes are applied to potentially misleading content by a bridging-based algorithm not based on majority rule, but instead agreement from users on different sides of the political spectrum. The program launched on the platform in 2021 and became widespread in 2023. Initially shown to U.S. users only, notes were popularized in March 2022 over misinformation in the Russian invasion of Ukraine followed by COVID-19 misinformation in October. Birdwatch was then rebranded to Community Notes and expanded in November 2022. As of November 2023, it had approximately 133,000 contributors; notes reportedly receive tens of millions of views per day, with its goal being to counter propaganda and misinformation. According to investigation and studies, the vast majority of users do not see notes correcting content. In May 2024, a study of COVID-19 vaccine notes were deemed accurate 97% of the time. Critics have also highlighted how it has spread disinformation, is vulnerable to manipulation, and has been inconsistent in its application of notes, as well as its efforts in combating of misinfor…

Joe Biden, the 46th president of the United States, delivered a State of the Union address on March 1, 2022, at 9:00 p.m. EST, in the chamber of the United States House of Representatives to the 117th United States Congress. It was Biden's first State of the Union Address and his second speech to a joint session of the United States Congress. Presiding over this joint session was the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, accompanied by Kamala Harris, the vice president, in her capacity as the president of the Senate. Biden's speech was primarily focused on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began six days earlier, as well as his touting of major policy achievements and goals surrounding the COVI…

A geopolitical turning point? Enlargement discourse after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has been cast as a geopolitical turning point for European Union enlargement. Whilst solidarity with Ukraine has translated into the swift granting of candidate status only a few months later, we know less about how the European Union's position towards other candidates has evolved. Drawing on the concept of 'rhetorical action', we explore the evolution of enlargement discourse in the wake of Russia's aggression: does the European Union's renewed commitment to enlargement concern Ukraine alone, or rather expand beyond Kyiv to signal a broader r…

The Russian invasion of Ukraine: some readings from Italian newspapers (20 February–5 March 2022). Abstract Over the last two years, the metaphor of war has often been used in Italy when discussing the fight against the pandemic, to describe the restrictions that have been introduced as a result, from lockdown to the Green Pass. Paradoxically, once the state of emergency ended, just as we were on the cusp of the long-awaited return to normality (to ‘peace’ in a sense), Russia's sudden invasion of Ukraine meant that war truly became part of Italians’ lives through the media. In this context, I have analysed the positions taken by the major Italian periodicals ( Avvenire , Corriere della Sera…

The European Political Community (EPC) is an intergovernmental forum for political and strategic discussions about the future of Europe, established in 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The group first met in October 2022 in Prague, with participants from 44 European countries, as well as the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission. It is distinct from both the European Union (which is a participant) and the Council of Europe (represented by its Secretary General). The 47 EPC participating states are home to 689.5 million people, constitute 8.7 percent of the world's population and represent about 23.5 percent of the global GDP.

Health System Organization and Logistics of Trauma Care Since the Russian Invasion of Ukraine: A Qualitative Assessment.. The February 2022 Russian invasion in Ukraine delayed healthcare reforms. The conflict has led to disruption of medical supply chains and a rapid need for integration between military and civilian entities. This study aims to assess the organization and logistics of the Ukrainian trauma system since the Russian invasion. Qualitative key informant interviews were conducted among Ukrainian military and civilian health care workers using a Ukraine Trauma System Assessment Tool from September 2023 to February 2024. Thematic content analysis was used to derive key themes rela…

Global Marine LNG Terminals, Tankers & Trade: A High-Resolution AIS-Based Dataset of LNG Trade (2020-2024).. We introduce a daily-resolution dataset capturing global maritime liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade flows from 2020 to 2024, derived from Automatic Identification System (AIS) vessel tracking and port call records. The dataset, LNG-T3, integrates LNG tanker fleet specifications, LNG terminal metadata, and AIS-based vessel position and draught reports to map global maritime LNG trade flows. It provides individual LNG tanker export and return voyage events, as well as daily LNG volumes for tanker transport, terminal throughput, and country-to-country trade. The LNG-T3 dataset revea…

The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, that began on 24 February 2022, has had a significant impact on women across Ukraine and Russia, both as combatants and as civilians. In Ukraine, the invasion has seen a significant increase in women serving in the military as well as a significant number of women leaving the country as refugees. In Russia, women have led the anti-war movement. First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska has stated that "Our resistance, as our future victory, has taken on a particularly feminine face," and has praised Ukraine's women for serving in the military, raising their children in wartime, and providing essential services. The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality a…

The Latin-script letter Z (Russian: зет, romanized: zet, IPA: [zɛt]) is one of several symbols (including "V" and "O") painted on military vehicles of the Russian Armed Forces involved in the invasion of Ukraine. It is speculated that the Z helps distinguish task forces from one another and serves as an identifier to avoid friendly fire; however, Russian officials have claimed various meanings for the symbol. Due to its association with the war in Ukraine, the Z has become a militarist symbol in Russian propaganda and is used by Russian civilians to indicate support for the invasion, further adopted later by Russian far-right organizations. The symbol has subsequently been banned from publi…

Western Hypocrisy over the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s full-throttle invasion of Ukraine is so shocking because it is such a brazen assault on the post-1945 world order. Legal solidarity with Ukraine is just and necessary, and more should be done by more countries. Yet, the relatively muscular international response to Russia itself exposes Western self-interest and double standards in not enforcing international law in other grave situations. Obviously not all violations of the same rule are morally or politically the same. But they are nevertheless violations of the same fundamental rules of a stable, mutually agreed world order. All unilateral breaches of these rules, without c…
