An autonomous building is a hypothetical building designed to be operated independently from infrastructural support services such as the electric power grid, gas grid, municipal water systems, sewage treatment systems, storm drains, communication services, and in some cases, public roads. The literature mostly refers to housing, or the autonomous house.

In general terms, lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), also known as autonomous weapons systems (AWS), are types of military drones or military robots, that can independently search for and engage targets based on programmed constraints and descriptions. AWS can take several forms, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV). However, the majority of alleged AWS are, at the moment, UAVs. As of 2025, most military drones (including unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned combat aerial vehicles) and military robots are not truly autonomous, as they still require human control.

A self-driving car, also known as an autonomous car, driverless car, robotic car, or robo-car, is a car that is capable of operating with reduced or no human input. They are sometimes called robotaxis, though this term refers specifically to self-driving cars operated for a ridesharing company. As of 2026, the term "self-driving" lacks an agreed standard definition and is also subject to commercial advertising and branding considerations. In 2020, Waymo was the first to offer rides in driverless taxis in the operational design domain (ODD) of limited geographic areas, but as of late 2025, no system has achieved full autonomy in all domains - sometimes referred to as "Level 5" on a scale of…

Integrated LiDAR-Based Localization Correction Using a Dedicated Support Sign for Autonomous Vehicles.. Accurate vehicle localization must be maintained even in tunnel sections where GNSS reliability is degraded. However, conventional GNSS/INS-based localization rapidly accumulates errors in such environments, affecting lane-level decision-making and path-following stability. To address this problem, this study proposes a dedicated localization support sign for stable LiDAR observation and a point-cloud-registration-based correction algorithm. The proposed method detects a dedicated sign using a PointPillars-based detector, and the corresponding point cloud is registered to a pre-built refe…

Legal infrastructure for transformative AI governance.. Most of our AI governance efforts focus on substance: What rules do we want in place? What limits or checks do we want to impose on AI development and deployment? But a key role for law is not only to establish substantive rules but also to establish legal and regulatory infrastructure to generate and implement rules. The transformative nature of AI calls especially for attention to building legal and regulatory frameworks. In this Perspective, I review three examples: the creation of registration regimes for frontier models; the creation of registration and identification regimes for autonomous agents; and the design of regulatory mar…

Spatial distribution and associated factors of public healthcare infrastructure in tourism-oriented environments: evidence from Southwest China in the context of residential tourism.. Introduction Public healthcare infrastructure is essential for ensuring equitable access to medical services, particularly in mountainous regions characterized by uneven development and tourism-oriented spatial environments. This study examines the spatial distribution of public healthcare infrastructure in Southwest China from a health geography perspective with particular attention to accessibility, spatial inequality and residential tourism contexts. Methods A cross-sectional spatial analytical framework wa…

An AI agent is an artificial intelligence program that can make decisions, pursue goals, and take actions independently of human programmers. Agentic AI contrasts with tool-like AI use for narrow, specific tasks such as answering questions - as with chatbots in the non-agentic forms that were common in 2023, or with traditional machine learning algorithms. While there is no universally agreed-upon definition of an AI agent, common attributes of AI agents include goal-directed behavior, use of external tools, the ability to interact with and modify an external environment, and the ability to autonomously perform multi-step tasks. Their control flow is frequently driven by large language mode…

Maximizing mobility: Distributed controllers of a Segway swarm for autonomous navigation in smart city environments.. The advancement of autonomous multi-robot systems is critical for addressing the mobility challenges within modern smart city environments. Distributed, acceleration-based controllers are designed and mathematically validated for a Segway swarm navigating cluttered, time-varying urban settings. A Lyapunov-based Control Scheme (LbCS) is utilized to develop a potential function governing collective swarm behavior. This function ensures target convergence, enforces formation cohesion, and prevents inter-agent collisions. It also dictates safe navigation around static geometric…
