Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Turtles (order Testudines) are reptiles characterized by a special shell developed mainly from their ribs. Modern turtles are divided into two major groups, the Pleurodira (side necked turtles) and Cryptodira (hidden necked turtles), which differ in the way the head retracts. There are 360 living and recently extinct species of turtles, including land-dwelling tortoises and freshwater terrapins. They are found on most continents, some islands and, in the case of sea turtles, much of the ocean. Like other amniotes (reptiles, birds, and mammals) they breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water. Turtle shells are made mostly of bone; the upper part is the domed carapace, while the underside is the flatter plastron or belly-plate. Its outer surface is covered in scales made of keratin, the material of hair, horns, and claws. The carapace bones develop from ribs that grow sideways and develop into broad flat plates that join up to cover the body. Turtles are ectotherms or "cold-blooded", meaning that their internal temperature varies with their direct environment. They are generally opportunistic omnivores and mainly feed on plants and animals with limited movement. Many turtles migrate short distances seasonally. Sea turtles are the only reptiles that migrate long distances to lay their eggs on a favored beach. Turtles have appeared in…

The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), also known as the green turtle, black sea turtle, and Pacific green turtle, is a species of large sea turtle of the family Cheloniidae. It is the only species in the genus Chelonia. Its range extends throughout tropical and subtropical seas around the world, with two distinct populations in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, but it is also found in the Indian Ocean. The common name refers to the usually green fat found beneath its carapace, due to its diet strictly being seagrass, not to the color of its carapace, which is olive to black. The dorsoventrally flattened body of C. mydas is covered by a large, teardrop-shaped carapace; it has a pair of large…

Biology, Nesting Behavior, Genetic Diversity, and Conservation of Leatherback Sea Turtles: Insights From Thailand and Global Perspectives.. Sea turtles are large reptiles that inhabit the world's oceans and include seven extant species within two families: Cheloniidae and Dermochelyidae. These species are threatened globally, with several subpopulations listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Thailand hosts five sea turtle species, including leatherback turtles ( Dermochelys coriacea ), which are significant for their nesting sites along the Andaman Sea coast. Conservation efforts in Thailand include beach patrols, hatcheries, and community education to mitigate threats s…

Osteological differences in the humerus of loggerhead and green turtles.. Limbs are the principal locomotory structures in vertebrate body, closely related to the habitat use and locomotion strategies of the species. Sea turtles rely almost entirely on their fore flippers for aquatic locomotion. The humerus is the most crucial bone structure connecting the scapulocoracoid and flipper, and studies thereof are used to understand turtles' locomotion mechanisms and swimming strategies. To define the morphological traits of the humerus of loggerhead ( Caretta caretta ) and green ( Chelonia mydas ) turtles and analyze interspecific differences, sea turtle carcasses were sampled from strandings an…

Sea turtle migration is the long-distance movement of sea turtles (superfamily Chelonioidea), comprising the swimming of adults to their breeding beaches, and also the offshore migration of hatchings. Sea turtle hatchings emerge from underground nests and crawl across the beach towards the sea. They then head offshore to the open sea. The feeding and nesting sites of adult sea turtles may be far apart, requiring some to migrate hundreds or even thousands of kilometres. Several patterns of adult migration have been identified. Some green sea turtles shuttle between nesting sites and coastal foraging areas. The loggerhead sea turtle uses a series of foraging sites. Others such as the leatherb…

Seasonal and annual variations in egg mass and clutch size for Loggerhead Sea Turtles (<i>Caretta caretta</i>): experienced females lay heavier eggs. Organisms modify reproductive traits adaptively or non-adaptively in response to temporal environmental variation. Long-lived iteroparous sea turtles are ideal animals to examine such temporal shifts in resource allocation. We analyzed seasonal shifts in egg mass and clutch size for Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758)) nesting at a temperate rookery (Yakushima Island, Japan) over a 2-year period, as well as annual variation in egg mass and clutch size over a 5-year period. Egg mass and clutch size, adjusted for female body…

Sea turtles (superfamily Chelonioidea), sometimes called marine turtles, are reptiles of the order Testudines and of the suborder Cryptodira. The seven existing species of sea turtles are the flatback, green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, Kemp's ridley, and olive ridley. Five of the seven species are listed as threatened with extinction globally on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The remaining two are not considered to be threatened with extinction, one of which, the flatback turtle, is found only in the waters of Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia. Sea turtles can be categorized as hard-shelled (cheloniid) or leathery-shelled (dermochelyid). The only dermochelyid spe…

Parentage Analysis in a Green Sea Turtle (&lt;i&gt;Chelonia mydas&lt;/i&gt;) Population From French Polynesia Reveals a Tendency for Inbreeding and Unexpected Plasticity in Reproductive Behaviour.. The reproductive systems of natural populations can significantly impact their genetic diversity by either preventing or promoting inbreeding. Therefore, it is crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of the mating system to evaluate a population's ability to maintain genetic diversity over time. In this study, we examine the mating system of an endangered population of green sea turtles in Tetiaroa, French Polynesia. We determine if different mating behaviours serve as strategies to avoid i…

Metagenomic insights reveal the differences in the community composition and functional characteristics of the sea turtle microbiomes based on host species and tissue region.. Introduction and methods Sea turtles have been proposed as health indicators of marine ecosystems for their characteristic of longevity and migratory, but they are facing serious threats due to various factors. The microbial communities within animals play an important role in health and disease. Our study aims to explore a thorough evaluation of the sea turtle microbiome by examining the oral, nasal, and cloacal microbial communities of three species: green turtles, hawksbills, and loggerheads, through metagenomic se…

The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), sometimes called the lute turtle, leathery turtle or simply the luth, is a large species of sea turtle. The largest of all living turtles and the heaviest non-crocodilian reptile, it reaches lengths of up to 2.7 metres (8 ft 10 in) and weights of 500 kilograms (1,100 lb). It is the only living species in the genus Dermochelys and family Dermochelyidae. It can easily be differentiated from other modern sea turtles by its lack of a bony shell; instead, its carapace is covered by oily flesh and flexible, leather-like skin, for which it is named. Leatherback turtles have a global range, although there are multiple distinct subpopulations. The s…
