El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de la Porciúncula: Or How Los Angeles Got its Name. ‭This study traces the route by which the city of Los Angeles came to be called by that name. Late in life St. Francis retired to a tiny hut on “a little piece of property,” una porziuncola near Assisi. Because angels were frequently heard singing there, the area around his hut was known as “La Valle di Nostra Donna degli Angeli.” Here, Francis experienced two appearances of Mary and her Son, during which he obtained the revolutionary plenary indulgence known as Il Perdono d’Assisi. The Porziuncola became a pilgrims’ shrine, and Francis’s hut was transformed into a huge basilica dedicated…

RITA AND LOS ANGELES. Rita knew Los Angeles before the freeways. I can't imagine it. Rita is what my mother had me call her from as early as I can remember. In fact, I don't ever remember calling her Mother. Margarita was her full name, but only relatives called her by that name except for her only brother, my uncle Necio, who called her Rita. She loved her brother, and he likewise loved her, so we saw him all the time. But she hated her five sisters who we al most never saw even though they all lived in Los Angeles. I don't think Uncle Necio saw them much more than we did. If he did, he never said anything about it. Rita's first marriage only lasted about a year, but I always heard her spe…

Literary Los Angeles. Literary Los Angeles Dana Gioia (bio) and Ming Di (bio) Click for larger view View full resolution [End Page 12] Perpetually Demolished, Perpetually Renewed by Dana Gioia Here, at last, was street-level Los Angeles in all its tarnished splendor. Los Angeles is an impossible city to describe, even for natives. Make any assertion about the place, and the opposite will often be true. There is an old downtown but no real center. Like London, Los Angeles is a metropolis formed by dozens of small towns and districts growing until they merged. LA is simultaneously Watts, Malibu, Hollywood, Bel-Air, Skid Row, Koreatown, Little Tokyo, and Redondo Beach—all connected by interloc…

The Tongva ( TONG-və) are an indigenous people of California from the Los Angeles Basin and the Southern Channel Islands, an area covering approximately 4,000 square miles (10,000 km2). In the precolonial era, the people lived in as many as 100 villages and primarily identified by their village rather than by a pan-tribal name. During colonization, the Spanish referred to these people as Gabrieleño and Fernandeño, names derived from the Spanish missions built on their land: Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and Mission San Fernando Rey de España. Tongva is the most widely circulated endonym among the people, used by Narcisa Higuera in 1905 to refer to inhabitants in the vicinity of Mission San G…

Hollywood, sometimes informally called Tinseltown, is a neighborhood in Central Los Angeles, California. Its name has become synonymous with the American film industry and the people associated with it. Many notable film studios such as Universal Pictures, Skydance Motion Picture Group, Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures are located in or near Hollywood. Hollywood was incorporated as an independent municipality on November 9, 1903. The municipality of Hollywood was consolidated with the City of Los Angeles on February 7, 1910 following a referendum. Soon thereafter, large portions of the American film industry migrated to the area, although now its film industry may be in decline.

The Los Angeles class of submarines are nuclear-powered fast-attack submarines (SSN) in service with the United States Navy. Also known as the 688 class (pronounced "six-eighty-eight") after the hull number of lead vessel USS Los Angeles (SSN-688), 62 were built from 1972 to 1996, the latter 23 to an improved 688i standard. As of 2026, 23 of the Los Angeles class remain in commission with 4 of those inactive in reserve, and they account for almost half of the U.S. Navy's 50 fast-attack submarines. Submarines of this class are named after American towns and cities, such as Albany, New York; Los Angeles, California; and Tucson, Arizona, with the exception of USS Hyman G. Rickover, named for t…
