The Cherokee or Tsalagi (Cherokee: ᏣᎳᎩ, romanized: Tsalagi pronounced [dʒalaˈɡî], endonym: ᎠᏂᏴᏫᏯᎢ, Aniyvwiyaʔi / Anigiduwagi) people are one of the Indigenous peoples of the Southeastern Woodlands of the United States. Prior to the 18th century, they were concentrated in their ancestral homelands, living in towns along river valleys in what is now southwestern North Carolina, southeastern Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, parts of western South Carolina, northern Georgia, and northeastern Alabama, with hunting grounds extending into Kentucky. Together, these lands encompassed approximately 40,000 square miles. The Cherokee language belongs to the Iroquoian language family. By the 19th century, European American settlers classified the Cherokee as one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" of the Southeast. The Cherokee wer…

Osage in Kansas describes the historical presence of Osage Native Americans in present-day Kansas on the Central Plains of the United States. The Osage are a Dhegiha Siouan–speaking Plains tribe, who are currently enrolled in the Osage Nation, a federally recognized tribe based in Oklahoma. In the 18th century, the Osage lived mostly in Missouri but claimed lands and also resided in present-day Kansas and Oklahoma. The U.S. government forced them to cede the majority of their homelands and assigned them to an Indian reservation in southern Kansas, where they lived from 1825 to 1872. They suffered many hardships and a declining population due to starvation and disease. Beginning in the 1850s…

The Texas Historical Commission by law consulted with the three federally recognized tribes in Texas and as well as 26 other federally recognized tribes headq…

Georgia that the Cherokee Nation was a "distinct political community" in which state laws had no force. The Nation encompassed the Cherokee of the southeastern United States; the "Old Settlers" who had relocated volun…
