The United Kingdom has a well developed and extensive network of roads totalling about 262,300 miles (422,100 km). Road distances are shown in miles or yards and UK speed limits are indicated in miles per hour (mph) or by the use of the national speed limit (NSL) symbol. Some vehicle categories have various lower maximum limits enforced by speed limiters. A unified numbering system is in place for Great Britain, whilst in Northern Ireland, there is no available explanation for the allocation of road numbers. The earliest specifically engineered roads were built during the prehistoric British Iron Age. The road network was expanded during the Roman occupation. Some of these roads still remai…

High-speed rail (HSR) is a type of rail transport network utilizing trains that run significantly faster than those of traditional rail, using an integrated system of specialized rolling stock and dedicated tracks. While there is no single definition or standard that applies worldwide, lines built to handle speeds of at least 250 km/h (155 mph) or upgraded lines of at least 200 km/h (125 mph) are generally considered to be high-speed. The first high-speed rail system, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, began operations in Honshu, Japan, in 1964. Due to the streamlined spitzer-shaped nose cone of the trains, the system also became known by its English nickname bullet train. Japan's example was followed…

Transport in the United Kingdom is facilitated by road, rail, air and water networks. Some aspects of transport are a devolved matter, with each of the countries of the United Kingdom having separate systems under separate governments. A radial road network totals 29,145 miles (46,904 km) of main roads, 2,173 miles (3,497 km) of motorways and 213,750 miles (344,000 km) of paved roads. The National Rail network of 10,072 route miles (16,116 km) in Great Britain and 189 route miles (303 km) in Northern Ireland carries over 18,000 passenger and 1,000 freight trains daily. Urban rail networks exist in all cities and towns with dense bus and light rail networks. There are many regional and inter…

With 139,000 km (86,400 miles) of public roads, the Netherlands has one of the most dense road networks in the world – much denser than Germany and France, but still not as dense as Belgium. In 2013, 5,191 km (3225 miles) were national roads, 7,778 km (4833 miles) were provincial roads, and 125,230 km (77,815 miles) were municipality and other roads. Dutch roads include 3,530 km (2193 miles) of motorways and expressways, and with a motorway density of 64 kilometres per 1,000 km2 (103 miles per 1000 sq. mi.), the country also has one of the densest motorway networks in the world. In Dutch a motorway is called "autosnelweg" or simply "snelweg"; other expressways are just called "autoweg" (lit…

The Universal United Kingdom Resort is an under construction theme park and resort complex in Bedfordshire, England. The park will be the seventh Universal Studios Resort, and the first in Europe since NBCUniversal sold Universal Mediterranea in 2004. The proposed development includes a theme park comprising multiple themed lands, designed to incorporate Universal Destinations & Experiences' signature approach to immersive storytelling, rides, attractions, and live entertainment. The initial plans for the resort also provide for a 500-room hotel and an integrated retail, dining, and entertainment complex. The resort has an anticipated completion date in 2031. The initial phase of the theme…

Modular FRP-steel bridges for the UK road network. In response to the UK's ageing bridge stock, fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) bridge decks are increasingly attractive as lightweight, prefabricated and low-maintenance alternatives to steel or reinforced concrete bridges. To those ends, the costs, embodied carbon, tyre load fatigue performance and end-of-life strategies of FRP decks must be addressed to enable their wider uptake. Through a National Highways-funded project, researchers from University College London, with support from COWI, have developed a design package for a modular FRP-steel hybrid road bridge that focuses on the above. The proposed bridge facilitates rapid construction,…

Private garden exposure and public park access in relation to type-2 diabetes incidence: a UK Biobank cohort study.. Background Existing longitudinal studies examining the relationship between greenspace exposure and incidence of type-2 diabetes (T2D) have primarily operationalized greenspace using vegetation indices. Little is known about the effect of greenspace types (e.g., private gardens) and public park access. Methods We investigated the associations between residential greenspace exposure, including private gardens (determined using Ordnance Survey MasterMap™ Greenspace) and public park access, with the incidence of T2D using the UK Biobank (UKBB) data. Public park access, such as n…

Pneumococcal Vaccination Uptake in People With Immunosuppressed Conditions Using Real-World Primary Care Data Across England: Protocol for a Retrospective Descriptive Study.. Background The introduction of pneumococcal vaccination programs in the United Kingdom has led to substantial reduction in the burden of pneumococcal disease in the general population, decreasing the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease and preventing associated mortality. Current UK guidelines recommend pneumococcal vaccination for adults aged ≥65 years, as well as for individuals aged ≥2 years with underlying medical conditions that place them at increased risk of severe pneumococcal disease. This includes adul…
