Roadside Picnic: Introduction. This chapter presents an overview on the genesis of the film’s creation; the novel it was based upon, written by the Strugatsky brothers, Tarkovksy’s first musings on its viability for a screen adaptation, as well as the various predicaments that arose in the film’s now-infamous production period. This includes the highly controversial filming within a contaminated body of water that may or may not have led to two actors and Tarkovsky himself contracting cancer in later years. The chapter also includes a brief summation of the film’s reception both nationally and internationally, as well as Tarkovksy’s subsequent legacy within the larger film community up to p…

US Highway 16 (US 16), also called Grand River Avenue for much of its length in the state, was a principal road prior to the post-World War II construction of freeways in the state of Michigan. Before the creation of the United States Numbered Highway System in 1926, the highway had been designated as a state highway numbered M-16. The modern route of Grand River Avenue cuts across the Lower Peninsula in a northwest–southeast fashion from near Grand Rapids to Detroit. Before the late 1950s and early 1960s, US 16 followed other roads between Muskegon and Grand Rapids, and then Grand River Avenue through Lansing to Detroit. In the years immediately preceding the creation of the Interstate Hig…

M-185 is a state trunkline highway in the U.S. state of Michigan that circles Mackinac Island, a popular tourist destination on the Lake Huron side of the Straits of Mackinac, along the island's shoreline. A narrow paved road of 8.004 miles (12.881 km), it offers scenic views of the straits that divide the Upper and the Lower peninsulas of Michigan and Lakes Huron and Michigan. It has no connection to any other Michigan state trunkline highways—as it is on an island—and is accessible only by passenger ferry. The City of Mackinac Island, which shares jurisdiction over the island with the Mackinac Island State Park Commission (MISPC), calls the highway Main Street within the built-up area on…

A picnic table (or picnic bench) is a table with benches (often attached), designed for outdoor dining. The term is often specifically associated with rectangular tables having an A-frame structure. Such tables may be referred to as "picnic tables" even when used exclusively indoors. Various types of tables have been used for outdoor dining throughout history, but the classic A-frame rectangular picnic table emerged in the United States in the early 20th century. The earliest similar table was described in 1903 and was based on the 18th-century sawbuck table; the most common modern design, known initially as a "Lassen table", was first used in 1926. While the original and most common materi…
