An integrated circuit (IC), also known as a microchip or simply chip, is a compact assembly of electronic circuits formed from various electronic components, such as transistors, resistors, and capacitors, and their interconnections. These components are fabricated onto a thin, flat piece ("chip") of semiconductor material, most commonly silicon. Integrated circuits are integral to a wide variety of electronic devices (including computers, smartphones, and televisions) performing functions such as data processing, control, and storage. They have transformed the field of electronics by enabling device miniaturization, improving performance, and reducing cost. Compared to assemblies built fro…

A power management integrated circuit (PMIC) is a multi-function integrated circuit that is used to perform power conversion and control power distribution in an electronic device. A PMIC reduces the number of components that would otherwise be necessary for the functions it provides, thus reducing the required circuit board space and improving reliability. For example, a PMIC typically includes several DC/DC converters or their control mechanisms. PMICs are widely used in computers, battery-powered devices (e.g., mobile phones, tablet computers) and embedded devices.

A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) or integrated optical circuit is a microchip containing two or more photonic components that form a functioning circuit. This technology detects, generates, transports, and processes light. Photonic integrated circuits use photons (or particles of light) as opposed to electrons that are used by electronic integrated circuits. The major difference between the two is that a photonic integrated circuit provides functions for information signals imposed on optical wavelengths typically in the visible spectrum or near-infrared (850–1650 nm). One of the most commercially utilized material platforms for photonic integrated circuits is indium phosphide (InP), whi…

Real-Time Quantum Vacuum Control in a Photonic Integrated Circuit. Abstract Solid-state quantum emitters coupled to optical waveguides provide an efficient and coherent interface for deterministic light-matter interactions, offering a promising route towards large-scale quantum photonic networks. Such networks, however, require active control of the optical phase between emitters, a capability that has remained elusive in integrated photonic circuits. Here we demonstrate a monolithically integrated mirror–phaseshifter–emitter system in a GaAs waveguide. A nano-opto-electro-mechanical slot-waveguide phase shifter is positioned between an InAs quantum dot and its mirror image formed by a phot…

Self-Sustaining Sensing Systems: Integration Strategies and Signal-Power Matching in Energy-Harvesting Electronics.. Self-sustaining sensing systems that simultaneously harvest ambient energy and perform real-time signal acquisition are emerging as key technologies for wearable electronics, intelligent Internet-of-Things platforms, and autonomous edge systems. Despite rapid advances in individual energy harvesters and self-powered sensors, a unified framework connecting device integration and operational strategy remains underdeveloped. In this review, we present systematic integration strategies and signal-power matching principles for energy harvester-integrated sensing systems. First, en…
