Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Herpes Zoster and Its Vaccine Among Primary Health Care Attendees in the United Arab Emirates: A Cross-Sectional Study.. Background Herpes zoster (HZ) is a reactivation of the latent varicella-zoster virus, with incidence increasing in older adults. Despite the availability of an effective vaccine, uptake remains low globally and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Objectives The objective of the study was to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding HZ and its vaccine among primary health care (PHC) attendees in the UAE, and to identify demographic factors associated with knowledge levels. Methods A cross-sectional study was con…

Association between the United Arab Emirates child safety seat and mandatory seatbelt legislation and child passenger injuries and fatalities.. Child occupants in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have one of the highest crash-related injury and fatality rates globally. The UAE child passenger legislation (CPL) enacted in 2017 mandates the use of child safety seats for child occupants until age of 4 years and seatbelt use from age of 5. The current study aimed to evaluate this legislation's association with reductions in crash-related injuries and trauma (Injury Severity Score [ISS]) among child occupants aged 0-14 years. Additionally, the study examined whether the relationship between crash…

An integrative assessment of the diversity, phylogeny, distribution, and conservation of the terrestrial reptiles (Sauropsida, Squamata) of the United Arab Emirates.. In the present study we use an unprecedented database of 5,535 distributional records to infer the diversity, ecological preferences and spatial distribution of the 60 species of terrestrial reptiles of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and use the 57 native species to test the effectiveness of the protected areas' network in conserving this unique vertebrate fauna. We infer a time-calibrated phylogeny with 146 species of squamates and 15 genes including all UAE terrestrial reptile species to determine the phylogenetic diversity…

Decarbonizing the emirates: A roadmap to net-zero emissions by 2050 in the UAE.. Recognized as a major global energy exporter, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) faces the unique challenge of transitioning to more environmentally sustainable practices while maintaining its pivotal role in global energy supply. Despite an abundance of literature focusing on the transition of net-importer countries toward carbon neutrality, limited attention has been given to the socially and economically viable pathways of energy net-exporter countries. This study examines the UAE's transition toward carbon neutrality across the power, industrial, and transport sectors. It highlights variations in technology dep…

Infant and young child feeding practices and anthropometric outcomes among children under 2 years in the Northern Emirates of the UAE: an analytical cross-sectional study.. Background Optimal infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices are important determinants of early childhood growth and development. Although breastfeeding and complementary feeding recommendations are well established, gaps often remain between maternal knowledge and actual feeding practices. Local evidence from the Northern Emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is limited, particularly regarding differences between local and expatriate mothers and the relationship between IYCF practices and child anthropometri…

Machine learning-based prediction and classification of seawater intrusion in the hyper-arid coastal aquifer of Fujairah, UAE. This study focuses on an unconfined coastal aquifer located in the Emirate of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates—a hyper-arid region where the coastal aquifer is vulnerable to seawater intrusion (SWI), posing a threat to groundwater quality. Fifteen machine learning (ML) algorithms were evaluated to predict and classify total dissolved solids (TDS) as an indicator of SWI. The models were trained using six hydrogeological parameters: rainfall, hydraulic head, distance from the coastline, aquifer saturated thickness, hydraulic conductivity, and specific yield. Model perfo…

New records and updated checklist of the seaweeds of the phycologically little-known coast of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.. A checklist of the benthic marine algae (seaweeds) of the Emirate of Fujairah is presented, with a total of 38 species: 9 brown algae (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae), 23 red algae (Rhodophyta), and 3 green algae (Chlorophyta). Of this number 17 species are new records and are based on samples collected in 2023 in shallow coastal waters with many from floating structures. Earlier records come mostly from intertidal surveys carried out in the late 1990s of open rocky shores that are common along the northern part of the 70 km long coastline of Fujairah. One of the seaweeds…
