Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
The coyote (/kaɪ(j)oʊt(i)/, KY-(y)oh-t(ee)) (Canis latrans) is a species of canine also known as the American jackal, prairie wolf, and brush wolf. It is native to North America, and it is smaller than its close relative, the gray wolf, and slightly smaller than the closely related eastern wolf and red wolf. It fills much of the same ecological niche as the golden jackal does in Eurasia, but the coyote is generally larger. The coyote is listed as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, due to its wide distribution and abundance throughout North America. The species is versatile, able to adapt to and expand into environments modified by humans; urban coyotes are common in many cities. The coyote was sighted in eastern Panama (across the Panama Canal from their home range) for the first time in 2013. The coyote has 19 recognized subspecies. The average male weighs 8 to 20 kg (18 to 44 lb) and the average female 7 to 18 kg (15 to 40 lb). Their fur color is predominantly light gray and red or fulvous interspersed with black and white, though it varies somewhat with geography. It is highly flexible in social organization, living either in a family unit or i…

Panama, officially the Republic of Panama, is a country located at the southern end of Central America in North America, bordering South America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Its capital and largest city is Panama City, whose metropolitan area is home to nearly half of the country's over 4 million inhabitants. Before the arrival of Spanish colonists in the 16th century, Panama was inhabited by a number of different Indigenous peoples. It broke away from Spain in 1821 and joined the Republic of Gran Colombia, a union of Nueva Granada, Ecuador, and Venezuela. After Gran Colombia dissolv…

Coyote Range Expansion in the Human-Modified Tropics of Mesoamerica.. Understanding species range dynamics is central to ecology and biogeography, particularly as global environmental change accelerates range shifts, expansions, and biological invasions. Carnivores are notable for their capacity to exploit human-modified landscapes, yet most research has focused on temperate regions where apex predator extirpation often facilitates expansion. By contrast, carnivore range expansions in tropical landscapes remain poorly documented. Here we assess the recent southward expansion of coyotes ( Canis latrans ) into the human-modified tropics of Mesoamerica, where they now overlap with apex predato…

New records and ecological insights of Spondylus limbatus (Bivalvia, Spondylidae) from the Panamic Province.. Background Although Spondylus limbatus is a fishery resource in several Latin American countries and has been widely reported throughout the Panamic Province, gaps remain in the knowledge of its distribution and ecology. This bivalve has been exploited since pre-Hispanic times, although the specific harvesting grounds are still uncertain. To contribute to malacological issues of both archaeological and contemporary interest, we established a reference collection that will serve as a basis for future studies, particularly geochemical analyses. Sampling consisted of…

The Panama–California Exposition was a world exposition held in San Diego, California, between January 1, 1915, and January 1, 1917. The exposition celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal, and was meant to tout San Diego as the first United States port of call for ships traveling north after passing through the canal into the Pacific Ocean. The fair was held in San Diego's large urban Balboa Park. The park held a second Panama-California exposition in 1935.
