Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Morphine, formerly known as morphium, is an opiate found naturally in opium, a dark brown resin produced by drying the latex of opium poppies (Papaver somniferum). It is mainly used as an analgesic (pain medication). There are multiple methods used to administer morphine: oral; sublingual; via inhalation; injection into a muscle, injection under the skin, or injection into the spinal cord area; transdermal; intravenously; or via rectal suppository. It acts directly on the central nervous system (CNS) to induce analgesia and alter perception and emotional response to pain. Physical and psychological dependence and tolerance may develop with repeated administration. It can be taken for both acute pain and chronic pain and is frequently used for pain from myocardial infarction, kidney stones, and during labor. Its maximum effect is reached after about 20 minutes when administered intravenously and 60 minutes when administered by mouth, while the duration of its effect is 3–7 hours. Long-acting formulations of morphine are sold under the brand names MS Contin and Kadian, among others. Generic long-acting formulations are also available. Common side effects of morphine include drowsiness, euphoria, nausea, dizziness, sweating, and constipation. Potentially serious side effects of morphine include decreased respiratory effort, vomiting, and low blood pressure. Morphine is highly add…

Chronic pain is pain that persists or recurs for longer than 3 months. It is also described as burning, electrical, throbbing, or nauseating pain. This type of pain contrasts with acute pain, which is associated with a specific cause, typically resolves when the cause is treated, and decreases over time. Chronic pain can last for years. Persistent pain often serves no apparent useful purpose. The most common types of chronic pain include back pain, severe headache, migraine, and facial pain. Chronic pain can lead to severe psychological and physical effects that may persist for a lifetime. Physical complications can include damage to brain neurons (grey matter loss), insomnia and sleep depr…

Strategies for Treating Acute Pain in Patients with Opioid Dependence, Opioid Use Disorder, or Long-Term Opioid Therapy: A Scoping Review.. Introduction Treating acute pain in individuals who use opioids is complex due to tolerance, physiological and psychological dependence, opioid-induced hyperalgesia, and withdrawal risk. Evidence guiding management remains heterogenous and variably robust. Objective To map and synthesize available evidence on strategies for treating acute pain in individuals with opioid dependence, opioid use disorder, or opioid tolerance from long term therapy. Design Scoping review. Data sources MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central, Web of Science, and Google Scholar wer…

Pain management is an aspect of medicine and health care involving relief of pain (pain relief, analgesia, pain control) in various dimensions, from acute and simple to chronic and challenging. Most physicians and other health professionals provide some pain control in the normal course of their practice, and for the more complex instances of pain, they also call on additional help from a specific medical specialty devoted to pain, which is called pain medicine. Pain management often uses a interdisciplinary approach for easing the suffering and improving the quality of life of anyone experiencing pain, whether acute pain or chronic pain. Relieving pain (analgesia) is typically an acute pro…

Recent Advances in Electroanalysis Techniques Used for Morphine in Managing Postoperative Pain. Determination of a particular drug in pharmaceutical preparations and biological fluids is critically important in pharmaceutical and medical sciences to avoid its overdose. Effective analysis requires sensitivities at ppb level or even less in the biological fluids with high selectivity. Morphine is a potent analgesic drug that is used to relieve severe pains like postoperative pain, labor pain, and cardiac pain. It is a μ-opioid agonist which acts directly on the central nervous system to relieve pain. It is very important to monitor the doses of morphine in the patient’s body under examination…

Opioid Toxicity Associated With Tirzepatide in a Patient on Chronic Oral Morphine.. Tirzepatide, a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, delays gastric emptying and can alter the pharmacokinetics of coadministered oral medications, particularly those with narrow therapeutic indices. We report the first case of life-threatening opioid toxicity precipitated by tirzepatide initiation in a patient on chronic oral sustained-action opioid therapy. A 53-year-old man with primary progressive multiple sclerosis complicated by quadriplegia, maintained on oral sustained-action morphine sulfate 180 mg/day for 13 years without incident, prese…

Pharmacologic Management of Pain in Children: Balancing Evidence, Safety, and Clinical Challenges.. Pain in children remains frequently underrecognized and undertreated despite significant advances in pediatric analgesia. The pharmacologic management of pediatric pain is challenging due to developmental differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, variability in drug metabolism, age-dependent responses, and the limited availability of high-quality pediatric clinical trials. This narrative review summarizes current evidence regarding the pharmacologic management of nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain in children, integrating developmental pharmacology, efficacy data, safe…

Low back pain or lumbago is a common disorder involving the muscles, nerves, and bones of the back, in between the lower edge of the ribs and the lower fold of the buttocks. Pain can vary from a dull constant ache to a sudden sharp feeling. Low back pain may be classified by duration as acute (pain lasting less than 6 weeks), sub-acute (6 to 12 weeks), or chronic (more than 12 weeks). The symptoms of low back pain usually improve within a few weeks from the time they start, with 40–90% of people recovered by six weeks. In most episodes of low back pain a specific underlying cause is not identified or even looked for: the pain is believed to be due to mechanical problems such as muscle or jo…

Compartment syndrome is a serious medical condition in which increased pressure within a body compartment compromises blood flow and tissue function, potentially leading to permanent damage if not promptly treated. There are two types: acute and chronic. Acute compartment syndrome can lead to a loss of the affected limb due to tissue death. Symptoms of acute compartment syndrome (ACS) include severe pain, decreased blood flow, decreased movement, numbness, and a pale limb. It is most often due to physical trauma, such as a bone fracture (up to 75% of cases) or a crush injury. It can also occur after blood flow returns following a period of poor circulation. Diagnosis is clinical, based on s…
