The following are two lists of animals ordered by the size of their nervous system. The first list shows number of neurons in their entire nervous system. The second list shows the number of neurons in the structure that has been found to be representative of animal intelligence. The human brain contains 86 billion neurons, with 16 billion neurons in the cerebral cortex. Neuron counts constitute an important source of insight on the topic of neuroscience and intelligence: the question of how the evolution of a set of components and parameters (~1011 neurons, ~1014 synapses) of a complex system leads to the phenomenon of intelligence.

A neuron (American English), neurone (British English), or nerve cell, is a cell that is excitable, firing electric signals called action potentials. Neurons form neural networks in the nervous system, mainly in the central nervous system. Neurons receive and conduct impulses. They communicate with other cells via synapses, which are specialized connections that commonly use minute amounts of chemical neurotransmitters to pass the electric signal from the presynaptic neuron to the target cell through the synaptic gap. Neurons are the main components of nervous tissue in all animals except sponges and placozoans. Plants and fungi do not have nerve cells. Molecular evidence suggests that the…

Biological neuron models, also known as spiking neuron models, are mathematical descriptions of the conduction of electrical signals in neurons. Neurons (or nerve cells) are electrically excitable cells within the nervous system, able to fire electric signals, called action potentials, across a neural network. These mathematical models describe the role of the biophysical and geometrical characteristics of neurons on the conduction of electrical activity. Central to these models is the description of how the membrane potential (that is, the difference in electric potential between the interior and the exterior of a biological cell) across the cell membrane changes over time. In an experimen…

Binocular Circuitry as a Model for Understanding Experience-Dependent Circuit Development across the Mammalian Cortex.. The binocular circuitry in mammals (e.g., mice, cats, and primates) integrates two distinct visual cortical circuitries-the contralateral and ipsilateral eye circuitries-into a cohesive functional system for three-dimensional vision. These two circuitries, differing in their developmental timing and trajectories, demonstrate the intricate interplay between innate genetic programs and experience. The contralateral eye cortical circuitry, largely laid down by intrinsic mechanisms and maturing earlier, establishes an initial framework, whereas the later-developing ipsilateral…

Whole-brain, all-optical interrogation of neuronal dynamics underlying gut and vascular interoception in zebrafish.. To select behaviors appropriate to their circumstances and needs, animals integrate information about the external environment with information about the state of their bodies, derived from sensing and processing internal signals (interoception). However, the brain-wide circuit activity underlying interoception and its integration with sensorimotor processing remains unclear, partly because of technical barriers to accessing whole-brain activity at the cellular level during physiological perturbations. We developed an all-optical system for whole-brain neuronal imaging in beh…

Locus Coeruleus as a Master Regulator of Diverse Functions in the Central Nervous System: Its Relevance in Ageing and Neurodegenerative Disorders.. Background The brainstem nucleus locus coeruleus (LC) is a rod-shaped, cylindrical, deeply pigmented neuromelanin (NM)-rich cluster of noradrenergic cells placed bilaterally in the dorsolateral tegmentum of the pons. The main neurotransmitter synthesised by these neurons is norepinephrine (NE), which polymerises to NM. Collectively, it regulates a plethora of activities, including vigilance, synaptic plasticity, memory processing, pain, stress responses, selective attention, cognition, sleep, emotion, capillary wall permeability and cerebral blo…

Clinical, magnetic resonance imaging, and neuropathological features of suspected inborn methylmalonic aciduria in a domestic shorthair kitten.. A 10-month-old domestic shorthair kitten was evaluated for progressive neurological dysfunction characterized by ataxia, episodic opisthotonus, impaired vision, dysphagia and seizures. Clinicopathological findings included marked hypocobalaminemia and abnormal concentrations of urinary methylmalonic acid, methylcitrate, and propionylglycine. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed generalized cerebral and cerebellar atrophy, with mild ventriculomegaly. Despite dietary modification, cobalamin supplementation, antiepileptic therapy, neurological deterior…
