A clock or chronometer is a device that measures and displays time. The clock is one of the oldest human inventions, meeting the need to measure intervals of time shorter than the natural units such as the day, the lunar month, and the year. Devices operating on several physical processes have been used over the millennia. Some predecessors to the modern clock may be considered "clocks" that are based on movement in nature: A sundial shows the time by displaying the position of a shadow on a flat surface. There is a range of duration timers, a well-known example being the hourglass. Water clocks, along with sundials, are possibly the oldest time-measuring instruments. A major advance occurr…

First-Principles Models of Triboelectrification.. Triboelectrification has been known for millennia and remains of great practical importance, with applications spanning pharmaceuticals, electronics, industrial processes, and especially energy harvesting. Its inherent complexity, however, has long hindered a definitive understanding. In recent years, the advent of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) has stimulated extensive experimental investigations and, in parallel, the development of promising first-principles-based theoretical models. Together, these advances have begun to clarify fundamental aspects of triboelectric charge transfer. This review traces the progression from early elect…

Migration of processes, files, and virtual devices in the MDX operating system. Load management in distributed systems is usually focused on balancing process execution and communication load. Stress on storage media and I/O-devices is considered only indirectly or disregarded. For I/O-intensive processes this imposes severe restrictions on balancing algorithms: processes have to be placed relative to fixed allocated resources. Therefore, beyond process migration, there is a need for a migration of all operating system objects, like files, pipes, timers, virtual terminals, and print jobs. In addition to new options for balancing cpu loads, this also makes it possible to balance the loads as…

Towards a neurophysiological model of kundalini: a theoretical framework informed by preliminary clinical observations.. The purpose of the present paper is not to validate the metaphysical claims of yogic traditions, but to examine whether their phenomenological descriptions correspond to measurable physiological processes. The proposal advanced here is explicitly theoretical: a hypothesis-generating model informed by preliminary retrospective clinical observations, not a claim of established proof. All interpretations of iconographic material are advanced as phenomenological correspondences - possible mappings onto identifiable neurophysiological states - rather than assertions of histori…

A kiln is a thermally insulated chamber, a type of oven, that produces temperatures sufficient to complete some process, such as hardening, drying, or chemical changes. Kilns have been used for millennia to turn objects made from clay into pottery, tiles and bricks. Various industries use rotary kilns for pyroprocessing (to calcinate ores, such as limestone to lime for cement) and to transform many other materials.
