An out-of-place artifact (OOPArt or oopart) is an artifact of historical, archaeological, or paleontological interest to someone that is claimed to have been found in an unusual context, which someone claims to challenge conventional historical chronology by its presence in that context. Some people might think that those artifacts are too advanced for the technology known to have existed at the time, or that human presence existed at a time before humans are known to have existed. Other people might hypothesize about a contact between different cultures that is hard to account for with conventional historical understanding. This description of archaeological objects is used in fringe scien…

Scientific racism, sometimes termed biological racism, is the pseudoscientific belief that the human species is divided into biologically distinct taxa called "races", and that empirical evidence exists to support or justify racial discrimination, racial inferiority, or racial superiority. Modern scientific consensus rejects this view as being irreconcilable with genetic research. Scientific racism misapplies, misconstrues, or distorts physical anthropology, craniometry, evolutionary biology, and other disciplines or pseudo-disciplines through proposing typologies to classify human populations into physically discrete human races, some of which are asserted to be superior or inferior to oth…

2. Finding our place. When did the process of using reason to try and understand human origins begin, and how did it develop? When was the scientific method first applied to the study of human evolution? ‘Finding our place’ begins by reviewing the history of how first philosophers and then scientists came to realize that modern humans are part of the natural world. It then explains why, using advances in molecular biology, scientists think chimpanzees and bonobos are more closely related to modern humans than they are to gorillas, and why they think the common ancestor of the chimpanzee/bonobo and modern human clades lived between six and eight million years ago.

Ancient DNA from the Upper Paleolithic mammoth ivory of Hohle Fels, Germany.. Hohle Fels, a cave in southwestern Germany, hosts one of the richest and best-preserved Upper Paleolithic ivory assemblages, with some of the earliest examples of figurative art, musical instruments, and personal ornamentation. Despite this, its ivory had never been tested for ancient DNA (aDNA). Here, we genetically analyze 25 anthropogenic ivory fragments from Upper Paleolithic archaeological layers and demonstrate the feasibility of aDNA recovery from non-permafrost ivory. We show that cementum yields significantly more and higher-quality aDNA than dentin, making it the preferred ivory material for paleogenetic…

Cave morphology and human-mediated sediment deposition: Late Pleistocene to Holocene evolution of the cave floor at Panga ya Saidi, coastal Kenya.. Panga ya Saidi (PYS), a cave situated in a forested upland near the coast of Kenya, contains an archaeological record that spans at least 78,000 years and is crucial for understanding the evolution of Homo sapiens populations in eastern Africa. Here we report on new systematic excavation, three-dimensional scanning, radiocarbon dating, and geoarchaeological analyses that provide insights on sedimentary dynamics, occupation patterns, and site-formation processes at PYS. Our data show that while unroofed parts of the cave probably contain the deep…
