The Vanguard Group, Inc. is an American registered investment adviser founded on May 1, 1975, and based in Malvern, Pennsylvania, with approximately $13.3 trillion in global assets under management as of 2025. It is the largest provider of mutual funds and the second-largest provider of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the world after BlackRock's iShares. Several mutual funds managed by Vanguard are ranked at the top of the list of mutual funds in the United States by assets under management. Along with BlackRock and State Street, Vanguard is considered to be one of the Big Three index fund managers. Founder and former chairman John C. Bogle is credited with the creation of the first index fund available to individual investors and was a proponent and major enabler of low-cost investing by individuals, though Rex Sinquefield has also been credited with the first index fund a few years before Bogle. Vanguard is owned by the funds managed by the company and is therefore owned by its customers. Vanguard offers two classes of most of its funds: investor shares and admiral shares. Admiral shares have slightly lower expense ratios but require a higher minimum investment, often between $3,000 and $100,000 per fund. Vanguard's…

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a type of investment fund that is also an exchange-traded product; i.e., it is bought and sold on stock exchanges. ETFs own financial assets such as stocks, bonds, currencies, cryptocurrency, debt, and futures contracts, as well as commodities such as gold bars. ETFs provide more diversification than owning an individual stock and more market liquidity than owning an individual bond. Most equity and fixed-income ETFs are index funds; they use passive management to replicate the performance of a stock market index or bond market index. These indices can be broad-based, such as the S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100 or focus on a certain industry such as the technology ind…

An index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that has the goal of replicating, before fees and expenses, the performance of a stock market index or bond market index by holding the same securities as the index in the same proportions or, in the case of synthetic ETFs, by holding derivatives that produce the same return as the index. Index funds use passive management; they merely mirror an index and do not use stock picking. Many notable investors have recommended investing in index funds due to their diversification, low fees, simplicity for asset allocation, and historical outperformance over funds that use active management, partially explained by the efficient market hyp…

A mutual fund is an investment fund that pools money from many investors to purchase securities. The term is typically used in the United States, Canada, and India. In Europe, UCITS funds, primarily registered in Luxembourg and Ireland, are considered mutual funds, while similar structures include the SICAV and the open-ended investment company (OEIC) in the UK. While exchange-traded funds are generally more popular with investors due to their tradability, lower fees, and tax advantages, mutual funds are popular in the U.S. among sponsors of 401(k) plans since open-end funds are priced only at the end of the trading day and fractional shares are easily purchased, making it easy for direct i…
