The plot is the series of related events in a narrative. So, each event (except the final one) affects at least one other. Plot may be synonymous with storyline. Simple plots, such as in a traditional ballad, can be linearly sequenced, but plots can also exhibit complex interwoven structures, with each part sometimes referred to as a subplot. E. M. Forster described plot events as relating through the principle of cause-and-effect; the causal events of a plot can be thought of as a selective collection of events from a narrative, all linked by the connector "and so". According to American science fiction writer Ansen Dibell, the term plot highlights important points which have consequences…

The fourth campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role premiered on October 2, 2025. Brennan Lee Mulligan replaced Matthew Mercer as Dungeon Master, while Mercer switched to a player role. Rather than Exandria, the setting used in the previous three campaigns, the campaign is set in Mulligan's new world of Aramán. The characters' intertwined stories explore a fractured world shaped by the death of gods and the aftermath of rebellion. With the cast expanding to thirteen players, the actual play campaign features multiple tables with the game in a West Marches format. After a four-episode 'overture' with the full cast, the players divided into three initial groups: the Soldier…

Scholars have described the narrative structure of The Lord of the Rings, a high fantasy work by J. R. R. Tolkien published in 1954–55, in a variety of ways, including as a balanced pair of outer and inner quests; a linear sequence of scenes or tableaux; a fractal arrangement of separate episodes; a Gothic cathedral-like edifice of many different elements; multiple cycles or spirals; or an elaborate medieval-style interlacing of intersecting threads of story. Also present is an elaborate symmetry between pairs of characters. The first volume, The Fellowship of the Ring, has a different structure from the rest of the novel. It has attracted attention both for its sequence of five "Homely Hou…

A story within a story, also referred to as an embedded narrative, is a narrative device in which a character within a story becomes the narrator of an additional second story. Multiple layers of stories within stories are sometimes called nested stories. A play may include a brief play within it, as in Shakespeare's Hamlet (a "play within a play"); a film may show the characters watching a short film; or a novel may contain a short story within it. A story within a story can thus occur in any narrative forms, including poems and songs. If the majority of a story's content is introduced or presented using the device of embedded narrative (i.e. a less-detailed "outer" story that contains the…
