In psychology and neuroscience, time perception or chronoception is the subjective experience, or sense, of time, which is measured by someone's own perception of the duration of the indefinite and unfolding of events. The perceived time interval between two successive events is referred to as perceived duration. Though directly experiencing or understanding another person's perception of time is not possible, perception can be objectively studied and inferred through a number of scientific experiments. Some temporal illusions help to expose the underlying neural mechanisms of time perception. Pioneering work on time perception, emphasizing species-specific differences, was conducted by Kar…

The distinction between subjectivity and objectivity is a basic idea of philosophy, particularly epistemology and metaphysics. Various understandings of this distinction have evolved through the work of philosophers over centuries. One typical distinction is: Something is subjective if it is based primarily in people's mental experiences (such as perceptions, emotions, opinions, imaginings), with its unique first-person nature. If a claim is true exclusively when considering the claim from the viewpoint of sentient beings, it is subjectively true. For example, one person may consider the weather to be pleasantly warm, and another person may consider the same weather to be too hot; both view…

The effect of cannabis on time perception has been studied with inconclusive results. Studies consistently show that most cannabis users self-report the experience of a slowed perception of time. In the laboratory, researchers have confirmed the effect of cannabis on the perception of time in both humans and animals. Studies have sought to explain how cannabis changes the internal clock. Matthew et al. (1998) looked at the cerebellum, positing a relationship between cerebellar blood flow and the distortion of time perception.

Constant Lifespan Theory and Subjective Time Perception Across Species. We propose the Constant Lifespan Theory (CLT), an original hypothesis stating that all species experience a subjectively constant lifespan, even though their objective lifespans vary greatly. In this view, each organism's internal clock ticks at a rate inversely proportional to its lifespan, so that the total number of “subjective moments” (ticks) per life is roughly the same across species. This idea is supported by evidence from neuroscience and biology: small, fast-metabolizing animals perceive visual flicker at much higher rates than larger animals ‘ , implying they live in “slow motion” relative to us. For example,…

On the Use of Philosophical Frameworks of Subjective Time and Time Perception in the Neuroscientific Research. The history of philosophical inquiry of time has been almost as long as the history of Western thought. Numerous concepts and ideas on the nature of time and time perception have been proposed over the centuries. Some of these ideas laid the groundwork for the psychological and neuroscientific studies of time processes. To this day, philosophical concepts inspire empirical research of time. In some cases, this interplay between philosophical ideas and neuroscientific studies of time processes occurs seamlessly. In other cases, however, attempts to directly apply philosophical conce…

The subjective character of experience, also referred to as subjective experience, is the first-person aspect of conscious experience. Subjective experience is commonly described as encompassing sensory experiences and mental events, including perceptions, emotions, thoughts, memories, intentions, and related conscious phenomena that arise from the unique perspective of an individual. The concept is central to philosophy of mind, psychology, phenomenology, and consciousness studies, where it is used to describe the fact that conscious experiences are directly accessible only to the subject undergoing them. The expression subjective character of experience was introduced by philosopher Thoma…

Inferring strategies from observations in long iterated Prisoner’s dilemma experiments. Abstract While many theoretical studies have revealed the strategies that could lead to and maintain cooperation in the Iterated Prisoner’s dilemma, less is known about what human participants actually do in this game and how strategies change when being confronted with anonymous partners in each round. Previous attempts used short experiments, made different assumptions of possible strategies, and led to very different conclusions. We present here two long treatments that differ in the partner matching strategy used, i.e. fixed or shuffled partners. Here we use unsupervised methods to cluster the player…

Inferring saline tracer transport characteristics from time-lapse GPR experiments.
Monitoring and characterization of flow and transport processes in the subsurface has been a key focus of hydrogeological research for several decades. Such processes can be relevant for numerous applications, such as hydrocarbon and geothermal reservoir characterization and monitoring, risk assessment of soil contaminants, or nuclear waste disposal strategies.

Monitoring of flow and transport processes in the subsurface is often challenging, as they are usually not directly observable. Here, we present an approach to monitor saline tracer migration through a weakly fractured crystalline rock mass by…

Experience refers to conscious events in general, more specifically to perceptions, or to the practical knowledge and familiarity that is produced by these processes. Understood as a conscious event in the widest sense, experience involves a subject to which various items are presented. In this sense, seeing a yellow bird on a branch presents the subject with the objects "bird" and "branch", the relation between them and the property "yellow". Unreal items may be included as well, which happens when experiencing hallucinations or dreams. When understood in a more restricted sense, only sensory consciousness counts as experience. In this sense, experience is usually identified with perceptio…

Visual perception is the ability to detect light and use it to form an image of the surrounding environment. Photodetection without image formation is classified as light sensing. In most vertebrates, visual perception can be enabled by photopic vision (daytime vision) or scotopic vision (night vision), with most vertebrates having both. Visual perception detects light (photons) in the visible spectrum reflected by objects in the environment or emitted by light sources. The visible range of light is defined by what is readily perceptible to humans, though the visual perception of non-humans often extends beyond the visual spectrum. The resulting perception is also known as vision, sight, or…

Observation in the natural sciences refers to the active acquisition of information from a primary source. It involves the act of noticing or perceiving phenomena and gathering data based on direct engagement with the subject of study. In living organisms, observation typically occurs through the senses. In science, it often extends beyond unaided perception, involving the use of scientific instruments to detect, measure, and record data. This enables the observation of phenomena not accessible to human senses alone. Observations in science are typically categorized as either qualitative or quantitative: Qualitative observations describe characteristics that are not expressed numerically, s…
