Hearing range describes the frequency range that can be heard by humans or other animals, though it can also refer to the range of levels. The human range is commonly given as 20 to 20,000 Hz, although there is considerable variation between individuals, especially at high frequencies, and a gradual loss of sensitivity to higher frequencies with age is considered normal. Sensitivity also varies with frequency, as shown by equal-loudness contours. Routine investigation for hearing loss usually involves an audiogram which shows threshold levels relative to a normal. Several animal species can hear frequencies well beyond the human hearing range. Some dolphins and bats, for example, can hear f…

Name use by companion parrots.. Humans organize social interactions in part by referring to others using proper names (hereafter "names"). Names might also facilitate the complex social lives of animals. Several animal species produce name-like signature sounds in nature and can vocally target interaction partners, but researchers hesitate to equate these sounds with the human linguistic concept of a name. A more direct way to ask if diverse species can learn names and use them appropriately is with animals that learn human words and phrases. Accordingly, we used survey data to determine whether parrots that live with humans regularly learn names and can potentially use them as individual v…

The dog (Canis familiaris or Canis lupus familiaris) is a domesticated descendant of wolves. Also called the domestic dog, it was selectively bred during the Late Pleistocene by hunter-gatherers. Dogs and the modern gray wolf share a common ancestor. Dogs were the first species to be domesticated over 14,000 years ago, before the development of agriculture, though genetic studies suggest the domestication process may have begun over 25,000 years ago. Due to their long association with humans, dogs have gained the ability to thrive on a starch-rich diet that would be inadequate for other canids. Dogs have been bred for specific behaviors, sensory abilities, and physical traits. Dog breeds va…

Diamond Dogs is the eighth studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released on 24 May 1974 through RCA Records. Bowie produced the album and recorded it in early 1974 in London and the Netherlands, following the disbanding of his backing band the Spiders from Mars and the departure of the producer Ken Scott. Bowie played lead guitar on the record in the absence of Mick Ronson. Diamond Dogs featured the return of Tony Visconti, who had not worked with Bowie for four years; the two would collaborate for the rest of the decade. Musically, it was Bowie's final album in the glam rock genre, though some songs were influenced by funk and soul music, which Bowie embraced on his next album…

Straw Dogs is a 1971 psychological thriller film directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Dustin Hoffman and Susan George. The screenplay, by Peckinpah and David Zelag Goodman, is based on Gordon M. Williams's 1969 novel, The Siege of Trencher's Farm. The film's title is derived from a discussion in the Tao Te Ching that likens people to the ancient Chinese ceremonial straw dog, being of ceremonial worth, but afterwards discarded with indifference. The film is noted for its violent concluding sequences and two complicated rape scenes, which were censored by numerous film rating boards. Released theatrically the same year as A Clockwork Orange, The French Connection and Dirty Harry, the film s…

Neural network analysis of pharyngeal sounds can detect obstructive upper respiratory disease in brachycephalic dogs. Abstract Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is a highly prevalent respiratory disease affecting popular short-faced dog breeds such as Pugs and French bulldogs. BOAS causes significant morbidity, leading to poor exercise tolerance, sleep disorders and a shortened lifespan. Despite its severity, the disease is commonly missed by owners or disregarded by veterinary practitioners. A key clinical sign of BOAS is stertor, a low-frequency snoring sound. In recent years, a functional grading scheme has been introduced to semi-objectively grade BOAS based on the prese…

Partial order can make photonic nanomaterials different. Light scattering from disordered materials has been extensively studied, but the influence of short and long-range spatial correlations in the disorder has been often overlooked. The possibility to engineer partially ordered materials (i.e. between completely amorphous and perfectly periodic) opens new perspectives for the control of light-matter interaction. We will discuss light propagation and absorption in partially ordered materials made of discrete scatterers in a transparent matrix. As an example, we will show that transparency, or almost perfect absorption, is expected for a specific type of partial order known as hyperuniform…

Development of behavioral observation audiometry tests for companion dogs.. Behavioral observational audiometry is applied to study the hearing function of preverbal children aged less than 6 months. We hypothesized that this method could be used to assess hearing threshold in untrained companion dogs. The small number of studies that examine untrained behavioral responses to sounds have not described determination of hearing threshold using this methodology. We designed and optimized a protocol for untrained dogs, performed in a soundproof booth to minimize extraneous noise influence. A handler assessed dog behavioral response to sounds played in ascending intensity on a speaker, positione…
