The geography of Atlanta encompasses 132.4 square miles (342.9 km2), consisting of 131.7 sq mi (341 km2) of land and 0.7 sq mi (1.8 km2) of water. Situated among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains at 1,050 feet (320 m) above mean sea level, Atlanta has the highest elevation among major U.S. cities east of the Mississippi River. The city straddles the Eastern Continental Divide, rainwater falling on the south and east sides of the divide flows into the Atlantic Ocean, while rainwater on the north and west side of the divide flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Atlanta sits atop a ridge south of the Chattahoochee River, which is part of the ACF River Basin. Located at the far northwestern e…

Mississippi ( MISS-iss-IP-ee) is a state in the Southeastern and Deep South regions of the United States. It borders Tennessee to the north, Alabama to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, Louisiana to the southwest, and Arkansas to the northwest. Mississippi's western boundary is largely defined by the Mississippi River, or its historical course. Mississippi is the 32nd largest by area and 35th-most populous of the 50 U.S. states and has the lowest per-capita income. Jackson is both the state's capital and largest city. Greater Jackson is the state's most populous metropolitan area, with a population of 619,968 in 2020. Other major cities include Gulfport, Southaven, Hattiesburg, Bil…

The Red River is a major river in the Southern United States. It was named for its reddish water color from passing through red-bed country in its watershed. It is known as the Red River of the South to distinguish it from the Red River of the North, which flows between Minnesota and North Dakota into the Canadian province of Manitoba. Although once a tributary of the Mississippi River, the Red River now is a tributary of the Atchafalaya River, a distributary of the Mississippi that flows separately into the Gulf of Mexico. This confluence is connected to the Mississippi River by the Old River Control Structure. The south bank of the Red River formed part of the US–Mexico border from the Ad…

The Mississippi River is the primary river of the largest drainage basin in the United States. It is the second-longest river in the U.S. after the Missouri. From its traditional source of Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota, it flows generally south for 2,340 mi (3,766 km) to the Mississippi River Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. With its many tributaries, the Mississippi's watershed drains all or parts of 32 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces between the Rocky and Appalachian mountains. The river either borders or passes through the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The main stem is entirely within the United…

Appalachia ( AP-ə-LATCH-ə or AP-ə-LAY-chə) is a geo-cultural region located in the Appalachian Mountains in the east of North America. While its geographic boundaries stretch as far north as New Brunswick and Newfoundland, Canada, the Appalachian Regional Commission's (ARC) borders begin in the Southern tier of New York and continue south through the Blue Ridge Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains into northern Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, with West Virginia near the center, being the only state entirely within the boundaries of Appalachia. The cultural area that has been traditionally perceived as Appalachia, also known as "Old Appalachia", is generally defined as a subregion inside o…

Blood Mountain is the highest peak on the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail and the sixth-tallest mountain in Georgia, with an elevation of 4,458 feet (1,359 m). It is located on the border of Lumpkin County with Union County and is within the boundaries of the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Blood Mountain Wilderness. There are several waterfalls, hiking trails and other recreational areas in the vicinity. This mountain marks the southernmost range limit for many Northern and Appalachian species, especially for plant species. Blood Mountain is the high point of the Apalachicola River watershed via the Chattahoochee River. On clear days, it is possible to see the skyline of Atl…

The Highest Elevation River Frogs in Africa are on Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Breeding populations of Amietia wittei were discovered near 4000 m on Mount Kilimanjaro. They occurred in two streams out of four. Their identification was confirmed by DNA sequencing. Adults, eggs and tadpoles were present. Reasons why they do not occur above 4000 m are discussed, including the observation of egg clutches that failed to develop. This discovery represents the highest known record of a breeding population of river frogs in Africa.

Richness and Elevation Patterns of a Stonefly (Insecta, Plecoptera) Community of a Southern Appalachian Mountains Watershed, USA. Protected areas are relatively free of human disturbance, are especially common in montane regions, and provide opportunities to study native fauna and flora. Stoneflies are model organisms to assess present and future environmental changes. While stoneflies inhabit cold lakes and a wide size range of lotic systems, diversity is greatest in streams draining mountain landscapes. This study addressed seasonal and elevation patterns of a stonefly fauna inhabiting a protected landscape draining the eastern flank of Mount Mitchell, the highest point of the Appalachian…

Global subsidence of river deltas.. River deltas sustain dense human populations, major economic centres and vital ecosystems worldwide 1,2 . Rising sea levels and subsiding land threaten the sustainability of these valuable landscapes with relative sea-level rise and associated flood, land loss and salinization hazards 1-3 . Despite these risks, vulnerability assessments are impeded by the lack of contemporary, high-resolution, delta-wide subsidence observations 4 . Here we present spatially variable surface-elevation changes across 40 global deltas using interferometric synthetic aperture radar. Using this dataset, we quantify delta surface-elevation loss and show the prevalence and sever…
