Increasing aridity threatens the sexual regeneration of Quercus ilex(holm oak) in Mediterranean ecosystems.. Knowledge of the recruitment of dominant forest species is a key aspect for forest conservation and the ecosystem services they provide. In this paper, we address how the simultaneous action of climate change and the intensity of land use in the past influence the recruitment of a forest species that depends on the provision of nurse plants to recruit. We compared the number of saplings (up to 15 years old) and juveniles (16 to 50 years old) of Quercus ilex in 17, 5.3 ha plots in the Iberian System (eastern Spain). We used a gradient of past deforestation intensity crossed with two l…

The standard circulating coinage of the pound sterling is denominated in pounds (symbol "£", ISO 4217 code GBP) divided into 100 pence, and values range (for coins in circulation) from one penny to two pounds. Before decimalisation in 1971, twelve pence made each shilling, and twenty shillings made a pound. Until decimalisation, circulating coinage ranged from the halfpenny to the crown (five shillings). As a prelude to full decimalisation, coins marked as 5, 10 and 50 new pence had circulated from 1968 (5p and 10p) and 1969 (50p) which until 1971 were valid for the amounts of one, two and ten shillings respectively. British coins are minted by the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales (though s…

Pre-dispersal strategies by Quercus schottkyana to mitigate the effects of weevil infestation of acorns.. We investigated how pre-dispersal strategies may mitigate the effects of weevil infestation of acorns in a population of Quercus schottkyana, a dominant oak in Asian evergreen broad-leaved forests, and assess if weevil infestation contributes to low seedling recruitment. We counted the number of acorns produced, daily from the end of August to mid-late November for 9 years from 2006-2014. We also recorded the rate of acorn infestation by weevils and acorn germination rates of weekly collections. Annual acorn production was variable, but particularly low in 2011 and 2013. There was no tr…

A Christmas tree is a decorated tree, usually an evergreen conifer such as a spruce, pine or fir, associated with the celebration of Christmas. It may also be an artificial tree of similar appearance. The custom was developed in Central Europe, particularly Germany and Livonia (now Estonia and Latvia), where Protestant Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. The tree was traditionally decorated with "roses made of colored paper, tinsel, apples, wafers, and confectionery". Moravian Christians began to illuminate Christmas trees with candles, which were often replaced by Christmas lights after the advent of electrification. Today, there is a wide variety of Christmas ornaments, s…
