Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
A proverb (from Latin: proverbium) or an adage is a simple, traditional saying that expresses a perceived truth based on common sense or experience. Proverbs are often metaphorical and are an example of formulaic language. A proverbial phrase or a proverbial expression is a type of a conventional saying similar to proverbs and transmitted by oral tradition. The difference is that a proverb is a fixed expression, while a proverbial phrase permits alterations to fit the grammar of the context. Collectively, they form a genre of folklore. Some proverbs exist in more than one language because people borrow them from languages and cultures with which they are in contact. In the West, the Bible (including, but not limited to the Book of Proverbs) and medieval Latin (aided by the work of Erasmus) have played a considerable role in distributing proverbs. Not all Biblical proverbs, however, were distributed to the same extent: one scholar has gathered evidence to show that cultures in which the Bible is the major spiritual book contain "between three hundred and five hundred proverbs that stem from the Bible", whereas another shows that, of the 106 most common and widespread proverbs across Europe, 11 are from the Bible. However, almost every culture has its own unique proverbs.

Sages and Wisdom across Cultures: A Comparative Study of Tiv and Biblical Proverbs (Proverbs 1:8-33). God has given proverbs to every peoples of the earth to His glory, as a resource for acquiring wisdom. The Tiv people of North Central Nigeria too trained up their youth with words of the wise that they may shun evil and follow righteousness. Both Hebrews and Tiv proverbs aimed at training one to fear God and to love one’s fellow neighbor. This work as a literary study analyzed Proverbs 1:8-33 and was optimistic for the work of the sages in our contemporary societies as it alloyed the Hebrew sages and Tiv sages in training the youth to fear God and love his commandment. It also explained th…

"Ordnung muss sein" (reformed) or "Ordnung muß sein" (traditional) is a German proverbial expression which translates as "there must be order". The idea of "order" is generally recognized as a key cliche for describing German culture. Franz von Papen, for instance, cited it in 1932 as Frederick the Great's "classic expression". As a slogan used by Paul von Hindenburg, it became "world famous" in 1930, according to The New York Times. A longer version is contained in a mid-19th century collection of proverbs where the title is a Wellerism: Ordnung muß sein, sagte Hans, da brachten sie ihn ins Spinnhaus (in English: "Order must be, said Hans, as they took him to the prison"). Related German p…
