Crow as a Rooster Between Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s Parable, ‘The Rooster Prince,’ and Agnon’s A Simple Story. In this article I examine the connection between Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s parable, ‘The Rooster Prince,’ and Shmuel Yosef Agnon’s A Simple Story. I claim that the Hassidic story is a link between the traditional Hebrew story and modern Hebrew literature. Although this Hassidic tale was not published until 1935, it was apparently transmitted orally among Breslov Hasidim, and it is likely that Agnon, who maintained close connections with this community, was familiar with this folktale. I recognize structural parallels and central themes: the son of a respectable family who goes ma…

The highest-ranking rooster has priority to announce the break of dawn.. The "cock-a-doodle-doo" crowing of roosters, which symbolizes the break of dawn in many cultures, is controlled by the circadian clock. When one rooster announces the break of dawn, others in the vicinity immediately follow. Chickens are highly social animals, and they develop a linear and fixed hierarchy in small groups. We found that when chickens were housed in small groups, the top-ranking rooster determined the timing of predawn crowing. Specifically, the top-ranking rooster always started to crow first, followed by its subordinates, in descending order of social rank. When the top-ranking rooster was physically r…

A Novel, Brief, Fully Automated Intervention to Extend the Antidepressant Effect of a Single Ketamine Infusion: A Randomized Clinical Trial. In this 3-arm randomized trial, adjunctive ultra-brief psychotherapy maintained the otherwise transient mood improvements associated with a single ketamine infusion. The associated benefit was just as strong 30 days later without any further treatments. The therapy was a form of classical conditioning called “self-association training”, delivered in eight 20-minute sessions over 4 days. These results have major implications for the small industry already offering serial ketamine treatments and regarding the mechanisms by which ketamine affects mood.

Extensible Neck: A Gesture Input Method to Extend/Contract Neck Virtually in Video See-through AR Environment. With the popularization of head-mounted displays (HMDs), many systems for human augmentation have been developed. This will increase the opportunities to use such systems in daily life. Therefore, the user interfaces for these systems must be designed to be intuitive and highly responsive. This paper proposes an intuitive input method that uses natural gestures as input cues for systems for human augmentation. We investigated the appropriate gestures for a system that expands the movements of the user’s viewpoint by extending and contracting the neck in a video see-through AR envir…
