An eclipse season is a period of approximately 1 month, occurring roughly every six months, when the orbits of the Earth, Sun, and Moon align such that solar and lunar eclipses occur. Eclipse seasons are the result of the axial parallelism of the Moon's orbital plane (tilted five degrees to the Earth's orbital plane), just as Earth's weather seasons are the result of the axial parallelism of Earth's tilted axis as it orbits around the Sun. During the season, the "lunar nodes" – the line where the Moon's orbital plane intersects with the Earth's orbital plane – align with the Sun and Earth, such that a solar eclipse is formed during the new moon phase and a lunar eclipse is formed during the…

There are 16 known moons of the planet Neptune, fourteen of which are named after water deities and creatures in Greek mythology. The largest is Triton, discovered by William Lassell on 10 October 1846, 17 days after the discovery of Neptune itself. Over a century passed before the discovery of the second natural satellite, Nereid, in 1949, and another 40 years before Proteus, Neptune's second-largest moon, was discovered in 1989. Triton is unique among moons of planetary mass in that its orbit is retrograde to Neptune's rotation and inclined relative to Neptune's equator, which suggests that it did not form in orbit around Neptune, but was instead gravitationally captured by it. The next-l…

U.S. Policy Toward Ukraine: On the Path to Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion (February 2014 – February 2022). The policy of the Obama administration toward the Russo-Ukrainian war established a strategic course that, despite tactical adjustments, was largely preserved during the presidencies of Donald Trump and Joseph Biden, up until the outbreak of the full-scale invasion. This course was based on the acceptance of the doctrine of Russia’s “escalation dominance” and on the provision of security assistance that was limited in scope and defensive in nature. Domestic political and interagency debates in Washington regarding assistance to Ukraine were effectively reduced to the narrow issue of supp…
