Romance and romantic love encompass a number of ideas about love, which are interrelated for historical and cultural reasons: passionate feelings of attraction—a mental state of "being in love", with focused attention (salience) towards a specific individual for courtship or pair bonding; the cultural practice or idealization of initiating intimate relationships for feelings like these, over more practical or ordinary concerns; a relationship or love affair initiated or maintained this way, which may be premarital or absent a commitment; and a love story involving these elements. In psychology, romantic love is considered to be a motivation or drive, which is distinct from (but related to)…

Sex, Love and Paradigms of Marriage. Chapter 6 discusses how far Shakespeare’s plays reflect the views of his age—that marriage is less a romantic and sexual bond than a partnership based on “friendship or ‘amity’. This Protestant paradigm of ‘companionate’ marriage remains in tension with the older patriarchal model of marriage in which the husband is ‘head’ of his wife. A Comedy of Errors explores the conflict between the two paradigms, with the bold wife Adriana arguing for equality between intimate marital partners while Luciana takes the traditional view that a wife should subject her ‘will’ (her sexuality and self-determination) to that of her husband. The Taming of the Shrew also que…

The Role of Autonomy in Multi-Partnered Relationships.. Polyamory is a form of consensual non-monogamy (CNM) that openly endorses multiple romantic and sexual relationships. Previous research has reported high satisfaction and need fulfillment in polyamorous relationships. However, the feasibility of polyamory for a wider population given the societal monogamy norm is highly debated. Desire for relational autonomy, such as the freedom to love multiple partners and be sexually intimate with them, is a widespread motive for engaging in CNM. In this qualitative study, we explored if and how this kind of autonomy was experienced by polyamorous individuals in daily life. Autonomy in relationship…

Arranged marriage is a tradition in the societies of the Indian subcontinent, and continues to account for an overwhelming majority of marriages in the Indian subcontinent. Despite the fact that romantic love is "wholly celebrated" in both Indian mass media (such as Bollywood) and folklore, and the arranged marriage tradition lacks any official legal recognition or support, the institution has proved to be "surprisingly robust" in adapting to changed social circumstances and has defied predictions of decline as India modernized. Arranged marriages are believed to have initially risen to prominence in the Indian subcontinent when the historical Vedic religion gradually gave way to classical…
