Mosquitoes, the Culicidae, are a family of small flies consisting of 3,600 species. The word mosquito (formed by mosca and diminutive -ito) is Spanish and Portuguese for little fly. Mosquitoes have a slender, segmented body, one pair of wings, three pairs of long hair-like legs, and a specialized, highly elongated set of mouthparts forming a proboscis, adapted for piercing and sucking. All mosquitoes drink nectar from flowers; females of many species have adapted to also drink blood. The group diversified during the Cretaceous period. Evolutionary biologists view mosquitoes as micropredators, small animals that parasitise larger ones by drinking their blood without immediately killing them.…

Mosquito bite allergies, also termed hypersensitivity to mosquito bites, are excessive reactions of varying severity to mosquito bites. They are allergic hypersensitivity reactions caused by the non-toxic allergenic proteins contained in the saliva injected by a female mosquito (male mosquitos do not take blood-meals) at the time it takes its blood meal, and are not caused by any toxin or pathogen. By general agreement, mosquito bite allergies do not include the ordinary wheal and flare responses to these bites although these reactions are also allergic in nature. Ordinary mosquito bite allergies are nonetheless detailed here because they are the best understood reactions to mosquito bites…

Species diversity and human biting rates of malaria and dengue vectors in central and northern Benin.. Background Malaria and dengue fever are transmitted by female mosquitoes of the Anopheles and Aedes genera, respectively. These diseases are among the most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, with dengue fever posing an increasingly significant threat. In this context, studying the species diversity of vectors, as well as their bionomics, including their ecological and behavioral traits, is essential for a better understanding of transmission dynamics, and for guiding appropriate vector control strategies. This study aims to characterize the species diversity and human bite rates of malaria a…

Behavioral determinants of disease transmission by mosquitoes.. Mosquito-borne illnesses have shaped human history and continue to impose significant global public health burdens, with particularly devastating effects in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. Blood feeding is essential for mosquito reproduction, as blood provides nutrients for egg development, and vector species are strongly driven to find and bite humans for this blood meal. These maternally driven behaviors not only expose humans to pathogens but also promote mosquito population growth. Recent advances have deepened our understanding of the sensory systems and internal state regulation behind host seeking and biting. Here…

Plasmodium vivax is a protozoal parasite and a human pathogen. This parasite is the most frequent and widely distributed cause of recurring malaria. Although it is less virulent than Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest of the five human malaria parasites, P. vivax malaria infections can lead to severe disease and death, often due to splenomegaly (a pathologically enlarged spleen). P. vivax is carried by the female Anopheles mosquito; the males do not bite.

Evarcha culicivora is a species of jumping spider (family Salticidae) found only around Lake Victoria in Kenya and Uganda. At maturity, E. culicivora spiders have an average size of 5 mm for both males and females. The range in size for either sex is quite small, with females being only slightly larger on average (4–7 mm compared to 3–6 mm). It is commonly known as the vampire spider because it indirectly desires the blood of vertebrates. It does this by predating on blood-sucking female mosquitoes in the genus Anopheles, the mosquito responsible for transmitting malaria in the region, as well as other vector-borne diseases in humans. Experimentally, these spiders are considered Anopheles s…

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that is transmitted by the bite of Anopheles mosquitoes. The symptoms of human malaria typically include fever, fatigue, vomiting and headaches. In severe cases, the disease can cause jaundice, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin 10 to 15 days after being bitten by an infected Anopheles mosquito. Those who survive an infection may develop partial immunity, being susceptible to reinfection although with milder symptoms. This partial resistance disappears over months to years if the person has no continuing exposure to malaria. Malaria is caused by single-celled parasites of the genus Plasmodium, generally spread through the bites of…

Exploring the importance and preference of sugar feeding behaviour of malaria vectors in sugar plantations of southern Malawi.. Background Reliable tools are needed to control opportunistic outdoor biting and resting malaria vectors that remain beyond the reach of indoor targeted interventions. The attractive targeted sugar baits (ATSBs) have demonstrated effectiveness in some settings but have shown limited impact in other areas, in part due to differences in mosquito species' preferences and the presence of competing natural sugar sources. We evaluated the sugar-feeding preferences of Anopheles gambiae in Chikwawa, southern Malawi, to inform context specific sugar-based vector control int…

The evolution of mosquito baiting: from chemical and electronic methods toward AI.. The spread of mosquito-borne diseases is accelerating owing to several factors, including human-made ones. In response, scientists are developing various types of baits, including organic, chemical, and electronic, to lure mosquitoes and monitor, control, and kill them. These baits function by replicating stimuli that attract mosquitoes, including human breath, body heat, color, and mosquito wingbeat sounds. Wingbeat sound baits generated from the wings of female mosquitoes are particularly effective in attracting males. Carbon dioxide is a potent attractant and the closest human mimic among the available mi…

Individual humans are more attractive to certain mosquito species.. Humans are not equally attractive to mosquitoes, leaving some more vulnerable to mosquito-borne illnesses than others. Body odor differences likely allow mosquitoes to discriminate between humans. Using a uniport olfactometer, we measured the attraction of Aedes aegypti , Ae des albopictus , and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes for each of our 119 participants. Ae. aegypti , but not other species tested, were slightly more attracted to male than female participants. Each of our three species ranked our participants differently, favoring a distinct subset of our cohort. For each species, mosquito attraction rates were used…
