The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetric pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summit is 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) above sea level, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe. Sometimes referred to as the "Mountain of Mountains" (German: Berg der Berge), the Matterhorn has become an indelible emblem of Switzerland and of the Alps as a whole. It has also been described as the most beautiful mountain in the world and has been claimed to be the most photographed mountain in the world. The Matterhorn has four faces, each roughly oriented towa…

The border between the modern states of Switzerland and Italy extends for 744 kilometres (462 mi), from the French-Swiss-Italian tripoint at Mont Dolent in the west to the Austrian-Swiss-Italian tripoint near Piz Lad in the east. Much of the border runs across the High Alps, rising above 4,600 metres (15,100 ft) as it passes east of Dufourspitze, but it also descends to the lowest point in Switzerland as it passes Lago Maggiore at below 200 metres (660 ft). It is the longest border of both Italy and of Switzerland.

The Klein Matterhorn (sometimes translated as Little Matterhorn) is a peak of the Pennine Alps, overlooking Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais. At 3,883 metres (12,740 ft) above sea level, it is the highest place in Europe that can be reached by aerial tramway or gondola lift, as well as by any other means of transport. The Klein Matterhorn is part of the Breithorn massif and overlooks on its south side the almost equally high flat glacier named Breithorn Plateau, just north of the international border with Italy. The name "Klein Matterhorn" is a reference to its much larger neighbour, the Matterhorn, which lies 7 km (4.3 mi) away across the Theodul Pass. The Klein Matterhorn, with the a…

The Alpine region of Switzerland, conventionally referred to as the Swiss Alps, represents a major natural feature of the country and is, along with the Swiss Plateau and the Swiss portion of the Jura Mountains, one of its three main physiographic regions. The Swiss Alps extend over both the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps, encompassing an area sometimes called Central Alps. While the northern ranges from the Bernese Alps to the Appenzell Alps are entirely in Switzerland, the southern ranges from the Mont Blanc massif to the Bernina massif are shared with other countries such as France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. The Swiss Alps comprise almost all the highest mountains of the Alps,…

The Pennine Alps (French: Alpes Pennines, German: Walliser Alpen, Italian: Alpi Pennine, Latin: Alpes Poeninae), are a mountain range in the western part of the Alps. Sometimes referred to as the Valais Alps (when applied to the northern Swiss part of the Pennines), they are located in the canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland and in the Aosta Valley and Piedmont of Italy. Together with the Bernese Alps and the Graian Alps (that include the Mont Blanc massif), the Pennines are amongst the three highest major subranges of the Alps.

Switzerland, The Alps, And Italy. Abstract I think Mrs Freshfield is being a touch disingenuous: the art of mountaineering, which she implies here is no more remarkable than a sort of sightseeing trip of summits, was exciting, and what could be more unfeminine than that? It took an adventurous spirit like hers, and other elegant pioneers like Elizabeth Le Blond and Mrs Cole not actually afraid of climbing, to dare convention by attempting it in the first place. After all, climbing meant physical discomfort, even danger; it meant impropriety (being alone with guides and no doubt having to hitch up one's hem occasionally).
