The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), also known as the North American brown bear or simply grizzly, is a population or subspecies of the brown bear inhabiting North America. In addition to the mainland grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis), other forms of brown bear are sometimes identified as grizzly bears. These include three living populations—the Kodiak bear (U. a. middendorffi), the Kamchatka bear (U. a. beringianus), and the peninsular grizzly (U. a. gyas)—as well as the extinct California grizzly (U. a. californicus†) and Mexican grizzly (formerly U. a. nelsoni†). The Ussuri brown bear (U. a. lasiotus), inhabiting parts of northeast Asia, is sometimes referred to as the "black gri…

The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a large bear native to the Arctic and nearby areas. It is closely related to the brown bear, and the two species can interbreed. The polar bear is the largest extant species of bear and land carnivore by body mass, with adult males weighing 300–800 kg (660–1,760 lb). The species is sexually dimorphic, as adult females are much smaller. The polar bear is white or yellowish-furred with black skin and a thick layer of fat. It is more slender than the brown bear, with a narrower skull, longer neck and lower shoulder hump. Its teeth are sharper and more adapted to cutting meat. The paws are large and allow the bear to walk on ice and paddle in the water. Polar…

Polar bears and expanding sea ice in the Mid Holocene Aleutian Islands, Alaska.. The archaeological record offers the opportunity to infer the effects of regional climatic shifts on species distributions and human-animal interactions. In Alaska's temperate Aleutian Islands, the archaeological record suggests that the Neoglacial climate phase (ca. 4700 - 2500 rcyr BP) was significantly colder and the region likely supported sea ice and ice-dependent animals. Previous analyses have identified polar bear (Ursus maritimus) remains in archaeological sites in Unalaska Bay, which have been used to infer bear range expansion and significant climate changes during this period. However, morphological…

Phylogeography of introgression: Spatial and temporal analyses identify two introgression events between brown and American black bears.. Brown bears (Ursus arctos) colonized North America from Eurasia in two distinct and temporally separated waves. Once in North America they encountered endemic American black bears (U. americanus) during range expansions from eastern Beringia southwards into the interior of the continent. The establishment of sympatry between these species provided the opportunity for hybridization and introgression, which was previously identified at the species level using D-statistics. Both species have broad spatial ranges that should limit the extent of introgression,…

Panda Bear Vs Polar Bear (Strength, Size, Diet, Habitat). Curious about the differences between panda bears and polar bears? In this article, we'll explore their strengths, sizes, diets, and habitats. Polar bears, with their impressive size and strength, reign supreme, weighing up to 1,500 pounds and measuring up to 10 feet long. On the other hand, panda bears are smaller, weighing around 250 pounds and measuring about 5 to 6 feet long.

Polar bear energetic and behavioral strategies on land with implications for surviving the ice-free period.. Declining Arctic sea ice is increasing polar bear land use. Polar bears on land are thought to minimize activity to conserve energy. Here, we measure the daily energy expenditure (DEE), diet, behavior, movement, and body composition changes of 20 different polar bears on land over 19-23 days from August to September (2019-2022) in Manitoba, Canada. Polar bears on land exhibited a 5.2-fold range in DEE and 19-fold range in activity, from hibernation-like DEEs to levels approaching active bears on the sea ice, including three individuals that made energetically demanding swims totaling…

Polar Bear vs Grizzly bear. Polar bears Polar bears are large carnivorous mammals that inhabit the Arctic regions of the world. They are well adapted to living in a cold and icy environment, with thick fur, a layer of insulating blubber, and large, webbed paws that allow them to swim and walk on snow and ice. Polar bears are apex predators, meaning they are at the top of the food chain in their ecosystem.

Population-genomics reveals a dual ancestry of grizzly bears.. Genetic variation among populations reflects both past demographic events and current population connectivity. We investigate the primary drivers of genetic differentiation in American brown bears ( Ursus arctos ) using 108 nuclear genomes. Our analyses reveal that genome-wide distances conform to neither an isolation-by-distance model nor a bifurcating tree structure. Building on previous ancient-DNA and fossil studies, we propose a demographic scenario in which continent-wide admixture during the Late Holocene has obscured, but did not erase, the genetic legacy of earlier colonization waves and subsequent gene flow events. The…
