The red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a bird of prey and one of the most common hawks in North America. In the United States, it is one of three species colloquially known as the "chickenhawk". The red-tailed hawk breeds throughout most of the continent, from western Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. The red-tailed hawk occupies a wide range of habitats and altitudes, including deserts, grasslands, coniferous and deciduous forests, agricultural fields, and urban areas. Screening for Oropouche virus in wild bird samples collected from wildlife rehabilitation centers, Florida, United States, 2021-2024.. Oropouche virus (OROV) is an emerging orthobunyavirus whose range has recently expanded in the Americas, with recent outbreaks in Cuba and travel-associated cases reported in the United States, raising concerns about the potential for its establishment in the United States. While the primary vector, Culicoides paraensis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), is distributed throughout the southern United States, the role of avian hosts in the dispersal and maintenance of OROV is unknown. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted molecular screening for OROV in North A…

Characterizing the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls within Biota Found in New Mexico.. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of industrial chemicals that were widely used in the United States before being banned by the Toxic Substances Control Act in 1976. Concerns regarding PCBs arose in the 1960s due to their toxicity, classification as a carcinogenic compound, and longevity in the environment. Although the production of PCBs in the United States is currently banned, PCBs can still be found in legacy equipment, and the environment and PCBs are still unintentionally produced in common building materials. To document the concentration of PCBs in biota predominantly found in nort…
