Albany ( AL-bən-ee; Menang Noongar: Kinjarling) is a port city in the Great Southern region in the Australian state of Western Australia, 418 kilometres (260 mi) southeast of Perth, the state capital. The city centre is at the northern edge of Princess Royal Harbour, which is a part of King George Sound. The central business district is bounded by Mount Clarence to the east and Mount Melville to the west. The city is in the local government area of the City of Albany. While it is the oldest colonial, although not British, settlement in Western Australia – predating Perth and Fremantle by over two years – it was a semi-exclave of the Colony of New South Wales for over four years until it was made part of the Swan River Colony. The settlement was founded on 26 December 1826 as a military outpost of New South Wales for the purpose of forestalling French ambitions in the region. To that end, on 21 January 1827, the commander of the outpost, Major Edmund Lockyer, formally took possession for the British Crown of the portion of New Holland not yet claimed by the Crown; that is, the portion west of the 129th meridian east, with the portion east already being claimed collectively by the Crown as New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. During the last decade of the 19th century, the town served as a gateway to the Eastern Goldfields. For many years, it was the colony's only deep-water p…

The Moroccan Settlement Project in Western Sahara (1975–) and the Indonesian Settlement Project in East Timor (1975–99). The chapter investigates the Moroccan settlement project in the Western Sahara and the Indonesian settlement project in East-Timor (1975-1999). It uses the framework advanced in the book and shows that both projects were meant to secure permeant territorial expansion into occupied regions. Following the model, the chapter analyses the four variables that led to the launch of the settlement projects: Legally plausible case for expansion, American support, institutional capacity and a low level of local affinity to the occupying states. The section dealing with each case in…

Urban Foundations? Colonial Settlement and Urbanization in the Western Mediterranean. This chapter examines the relation between urbanization and colonial settlement in the western Mediterranean and evaluates whether the Mediterranean should be considered an urban region. It investigates the interconnection between urbanization and colonialism and analyses archaeological evidence for early colonial settlement, focusing on Greek colonization in South Italy and Sicily and the Phoenician presence on the Tyrrhenian islands and the Spanish south-east coast. The findings indicate that the urban fabric of many colonial foundations does not necessarily have to be understood in urban terms.

Links between bushmeat species occupancy and indigenous hunting: a pilot study from Royal Belum State Park, Peninsula Malaysia. Indigenous communities have been hunting bushmeat species in the tropical forests of South East Asia for over 40,000 years. Today however, many bushmeat species are threatened by unsustainable hunting compounded by the pressures of decreasing forest area and growing human populations. This pilot study aimed to investigate the relationship between the Jahai, an indigenous hunter gatherer tribe and the mammal bushmeat species which they hunt in Royal Belum State Park (RBSP), peninsula Malaysia. A wildlife triggered camera survey was conducted between early May and la…

Shire () is a traditional term for an administrative division of land in Great Britain and some other English-speaking and Commonwealth countries. It is generally synonymous with county (such as Berkshire and Cheshire). English counties are among the oldest extant national divisions in the world. It was first used in Wessex from the beginning of Anglo-Saxon settlement, and spread to most of the rest of England in the 10th century. Today, 23 counties bear the "-shire" suffix in England, 23 in Scotland, and 10 in Wales. In some rural and regional parts of Australia, including parts of the state of Victoria, a shire is a local government area; however, in Australia, shire is not synonymous wit…

King George Sound (Menang Nyungar: Mammang-Koort) is a sound on the south coast of Western Australia. Named "King George the Third's Sound" by George Vancouver in 1791, it was referred to as "King George's Sound" from 1805. The name "King George Sound" gradually came into use from about 1934, prompted by new Admiralty charts supporting the intention to eliminate the possessive "s" from geographical names. The sound covers an area of 110 square kilometres (42 sq mi) and varies in depth from 10 to 35 metres (33 to 115 ft). Situated at its western shore is the city of Albany. The sound is bordered by the mainland to the north, by Vancouver Peninsula on the west, and by Bald Head and Flinders P…

Western Australian borders are the boundaries of the Australian state of Western Australia. They follow the Indian Ocean coastline to the north, west, and south, and run overland near the 129th meridian east. The eastern land border is with the Northern Territory and South Australia. That eastern land border is not perfectly aligned with 129° east and deviates from that meridian at some points. The closest Western Australian town to the eastern border is Kununurra, which lies about 25 kilometres (16 mi) west of the border with the Northern Territory. In South Australia, Border Village adjoins the Western Australian border.

The coastline of the Albany area was observed by Europeans for the first time in 1627 by the Dutchman François Thijssen, captain of the ship 't Gulden Zeepaert (transl. The Golden Seahorse), who sailed to the east as far as Ceduna in South Australia and back. Captain Thijssen had discovered the south coast of Australia and charted about 1,768 kilometres (1,099 mi) of it between Cape Leeuwin and the Nuyts Archipelago. On 29 September 1791, explorer Captain George Vancouver while exploring the south coast on HMS Discovery, entered and named King George the Third's Sound and Princess Royal Harbour, and took possession of New Holland for the British Crown. Vancouver went out of his way to estab…
