This is a list of women's firsts noting the first time that a woman or women achieved a given historical feat. A shorthand phrase for this development is "breaking the gender barrier" or "breaking the glass ceiling." Other terms related to the glass ceiling can be used for specific fields related to those terms, such as "breaking the brass ceiling" for women in the military and "breaking the stained glass ceiling" for women clergy. Inclusion on the list is reserved for achievements by women that have significant historical impact.

When will women chiefs break the brass ceiling without falling off the glass cliff?. Abstract By 2024 women were or had been police chiefs in New York City; Philadelphia; Washington, DC; Atlanta; Houston; Tampa; Seattle, and Portland, OR. They make up about 3% of all chiefs of police. But those who have broken the brass ceiling to become chiefs of police face a glass cliff; they are over-represented in high-risk leadership roles, often in troubled agencies, with an increased chance of failure. This paper documents examples of women who have broken the brass ceiling only to fall off the glass cliff because of events largely outside their ability to control.

Long term changes to auditory sensitivity following blast trauma in mice.. Blast trauma is a common acoustic/physical insult occurring in modern warfare. Twenty percent of active duty military come into close proximity to explosions and experience mild to severe sensory deficits. The prevalence of such injuries is high but correlating auditory sensitivity changes with the initial insult is difficult because injury and evaluations are often separated by long time periods. Here, auditory sensitivity was measured before and after a traumatic blast in adult CBA/CaJ mice using auditory brainstem responses, distortion production otoacoustic emissions, and behavioral detection of pure tones. These…

The stained-glass ceiling is a sociological phenomenon in religious communities similar to the concept of the "glass ceiling". This concept revolves around the apparent difficulty for women who seek to gain a role within church leadership. The use of the term "stained-glass ceiling" is metaphorical, indicating a certain level of power or authority within structures that women tend not to rise above within church hierarchies. This could range from a group's de jure barring of women from positions like priest, bishop, pastor, rabbi, or similar clerical figures, to gender discrimination at the level of local congregations that prevent women from rising to any role of particular status or power…

A chandelier () is an ornamental lighting device, typically with spreading branched supports for multiple lights, designed to be hung from the ceiling. Chandeliers are often ornate, and they were originally designed to hold candles, but now incandescent light bulbs as well as fluorescent lamps and LEDs are commonly used. A wide variety of materials ranging from wood and earthenware to silver and gold can be used to make chandeliers. Brass is one of the most popular materials, but glass is most commonly associated with chandeliers. Classic glass and crystal chandeliers have arrays of hanging "crystal" prisms to illuminate a room with refracted light. Chandeliers may illuminate a room with di…

A glass ceiling is a metaphor usually set in relation to women, used to represent an invisible barrier that prevents a given demographic from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy. The metaphor was first used by feminists in reference to barriers in the careers of high-achieving women. It was coined by Marilyn Loden during a speech in 1978. In the United States, the concept is sometimes extended to refer to racial inequality. Racialised women in white-majority countries often find the most difficulty in "breaking the glass ceiling" because they lie at the intersection of two historically marginalized groups: women and people of color. East Asian and East Asian American news outlets h…
