Chiapas, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Chiapas, is one of the states that make up the 32 federal entities of Mexico. It comprises 124 municipalities as of September 2017 and its capital and largest city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Other important population centers in Chiapas include Ocosingo, Tapachula, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Comitán, and Arriaga. Chiapas is the southernmost state in Mexico, and it borders the states of Oaxaca to the west, Veracruz to the northwest, and Tabasco to the north, and the Petén, Quiché, Huehuetenango, and San Marcos departments of Guatemala to the east and southeast. Chiapas has a significant coastline on the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. In general…

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Sardo Negro Cattle.. Livestock production in Mexico takes place in a wide range of agroecological regions, with approximately one-third of the cattle population raised under tropical conditions, where heat stress and disease pressure limit the performance of poorly adapted animals. The Mexican Sardo Negro cattle breed ( Bos indicus ) is environmentally resilient and is used for both meat and milk production; however, information regarding its population structure and reproductive management remains limited. Therefore, the genetic diversity and population structure of this breed were evaluated through pedigree analysis to support conservation str…

Landscapes of sandy areas along a rainfall gradient of 90-450 mm, average annual rainfall. Dryland areas are regarded as highly sensitive to climatic changes. A positive relationship between average annual rainfall, and environmental factors is often assumed for areas with an average annual rainfall of 100-400 mm. The above assumption disregards the fact that a climate change in some dry-land areas is not limited to climatic factors. In addition, the climatic models, based on average annual rainfall, disregard the rainfall characteristics at the rain-shower level, which greatly influence the degree to which rainwater will percolate, thereby significantly affecting the spatial redistribution…

The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season was a near-average yet destructive Atlantic hurricane season. Despite having an average number of named storms and a below average amount of major hurricanes, it became the fourth-costliest Atlantic hurricane season on record, behind only 2024, 2005, and 2017, mostly due to Hurricane Ian. The season officially began on June 1, and ended on November 30. These dates, adopted by convention, historically describe the period in each year when most subtropical or tropical cyclogenesis occurs in the Atlantic Ocean. This year's first Atlantic named storm, Tropical Storm Alex, developed four days after the start of the season, making this the first season since 201…

Tropical Storm Frances caused extensive flooding in Mexico and Texas in September 1998. The sixth tropical cyclone and sixth named storm of the annual hurricane season, Frances developed from a low pressure area in the Gulf of Mexico on September 8. The cyclone moved northward through the western Gulf of Mexico, making landfall across the central Texas coastline before recurving across the Midwest through southeast Canada and New England. A large tropical cyclone for the Atlantic basin, yet an average sized system by western Pacific standards, the storm produced heavy rains across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Texas, western Louisiana and the Great Plains. The interaction between developing F…

Genotype-environment interaction of genotypes of cocoa in Mexico.. Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) production is significantly influenced by genotype-environment interactions, which affect key agronomic traits such as yield, fruit quality, and disease resistance. Despite advances in cacao breeding, one of the main challenges remains the identification of stable, high-performing clones that can adapt to different environmental conditions while maintaining desirable agronomic characteristics. In particular, the introduction of improved clones with high productivity and tolerance to diseases such as frosty pod rot is essential to ensure sustainable production. However, limited information exists on…
