When the Spanish arrived in South America, they initially banned coca but soon legalized and taxed it after seeing its importance to local labor The active ingredient, cocaine, was first isolated in 1855 by Friedrich Gaedcke and later refined by Albert Niemann, who named it “cocaine.” In the late 1800s, cocaine became popular in Western medicine as a local anesthetic and was widely used in various products, including drinks and remedies. The global cocaine trade operates in illicit and legal spheres, encompassing international trafficking networks and tightly-controlled commercial and pharmaceutical supply chains. The illicit market is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise driven by Andean coca cultivation and decentralized trafficking networks supplying consumer hubs. In response to widespread retail adulteration with agents such as levamisole, growing public health concerns, and risks including opioid contamination, policies increasingly emphasize harm-reduction strategies such as reagent testing kits and the distribution of reversal agents. The legal supply chain involves strictly-regulated cultivation in countries such as B…

Cola is a carbonated soft drink flavored with vanilla, cinnamon, citrus oils, and other flavorings (typically including sugar or artificial sweeteners). The name, however, comes from the kola nut (Cola acuminata), which imbues the beverage with the stimulant caffeine (though other sources of caffeine are generally used in modern formulations). A stimulating soda using kola appeared circa 1880 in the United States. Cola became popular worldwide after the success of Coca-Cola, a trademarked brand which has been imitated by other manufacturers. In 1886, American pharmacist John Stith Pemberton finetuned his recipe for a soft drink; it also contained unspent coca leaf extract, and therefore coc…

Pemberton's French Wine Coca was a coca wine created by the druggist John Pemberton, the inventor of Coca-Cola. It was an alcoholic beverage, mixed with coca, kola nut, and damiana. The original recipe contained the ingredient cocaethylene (cocaine mixed with alcohol), which was removed, just like the alcohol had before it, in 1899 because of a social stigma surrounding the rampant use of cocaine at the time.
