The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is a leopard subspecies native to the Primorye region of southeastern Russia and northern China. It is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, as in 2007, only 19–26 wild leopards were estimated to survive in southeastern Russia and northeastern China. As of 2015, fewer than 60 individuals were estimated to survive in Russia and China. Camera-trapping surveys conducted between 2014 and 2015 revealed 92 individuals in an 8,398 km2 (3,242 sq mi) large transboundary area along the Russian-Chinese border. As of 2023, the population was thought to comprise 128–130 sub-adult and adult individuals. Results of genetic research indicate tha…

From pixels to conservation: Deep learning for automated monitoring of rare and endangered wildlife.. Conservation of rare and endangered species requires scalable monitoring solutions to address accelerating biodiversity loss. Deep learning has transformed wildlife monitoring, enabling automated species identification, individual tracking, demographic inference, and behavioral analysis from camera traps, drones, and video surveillance. This review systematically analyzes 159 wildlife monitoring studies (2014-2026) across four technical domains: species recognition, individual re-identification, soft biometrics (age/sex estimation), and behavior/pose analysis. We examine architectural evolu…

Cerebellar hypoplasia in an Amur leopard cat (<i>Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura</i>) with feline panleukopenia virus infection.. Cerebellar hypoplasia caused by feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is well documented in domestic cats. Still, it remains unreported in wild felid species, including the Amur leopard cat ( Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura ). Understanding the impact of such viral diseases on wild populations is crucial for advancing conservation efforts and protecting wildlife. An orphaned Amur leopard cat exhibiting idiopathic ataxia was rescued. Initial diagnostics, including physical examination, radiography, and blood analysis, yielded no remarkable findings, though its cl…

Intra- and Interspecific Spatial Temporal Interactions Drive Habitat Selection of Three Sympatric Top Predators.. The population distribution and habitat selection of top predators are critically important for species conservation and habitat management. While previous studies have identified environmental characteristics and food resources as factors influencing animal habitat selection, the roles of potential intra- and interspecific competition have often been overlooked. Utilizing 6 years (2014-2019) of continuous infrared camera trap data from the Hunchun region of China, this study investigated the population density changes of sympatric Amur tigers ( Panthera tigris altaica ), Amur l…

First Genome Assembly of the Critically Endangered Arabian Leopard (<i>Panthera pardus nimr</i>).. The Arabian leopard ( Panthera pardus nimr ), native to the Arabian Peninsula, is critically endangered and faces acute threats from habitat fragmentation, low population size, and genetic erosion. As a continuation of our previous study on the complete mitochondrial genome of this subspecies, we now report the first nuclear genome assembly of P. p. nimr , generated from the same wild-born male individual sampled in the Oman. Using PacBio HiFi long-read sequencing, we produced 162.9 gigabases (Gb) of high-fidelity data and assembled a haplotype-aware draft genome with HiFiasm. The…

The Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas) is a leopard subspecies confined to the Indonesian island of Java. It has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2021. The population is estimated at 188–571 mature individuals in 22 fragmented subpopulations and a declining population trend. The total remaining habitat is estimated at only 2,267.9 to 3,277.3 km2 (875.6 to 1,265.4 sq mi).
