Traditionally, the canon of Sherlock Holmes consists of the 56 short stories and four novels written by the British writer and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In this context, the term "canon" is an attempt to distinguish between Doyle's original works and subsequent works by other authors using the same characters. Usually capitalised by fans of the Sherlockian game as "the Canon", the description of these 60 adventures as the Sherlock Holmes canon and the game of applying the methods of "Higher Criticism" to it was started by Ronald Knox as a playful use of the traditional definition of "canon" as an authoritative list of books accepted as holy scripture.

The Enola Holmes Mysteries is a young adult fiction series of detective novels by American author Nancy Springer, starring Enola Holmes as the 14-year-old sister of an already famous Sherlock Holmes, twenty years her senior. There are ten books in the series, and one short story all written from 2006–2023. This pastiche series borrows characters and settings from the established canon of Sherlock Holmes, but the Enola character is Springer's creation and specific to this series. The first book, The Case of the Missing Marquess, and the fifth, The Case of the Cryptic Crinoline, were nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Juvenile Mystery in 2007 and 2010, respectively. In 2020, the series wa…

A recent survey on controllable text generation: A causal perspective.. As an important subject of natural language generation, Controllable Text Generation (CTG) focuses on integrating additional constraints and controls while generating texts and has attracted a lot of attention. Existing controllable text generation approaches mainly capture the statistical association implied within training texts, but generated texts lack causality consideration. This paper intends to review recent CTG approaches from a causal perspective. Firstly, according to previous research on basic types of CTG models, it is discovered that their essence is to obtain the association, and then four kinds of challe…

Authorship and authenticity in Sherlock Holmes pastiches. Rewritings and adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes stories are traditionally called pastiches among fandom. This article juxtaposes that established use with the literary critical notion of pastiche as imitation of style, and shows how stylistic affinity to the originals produces complex effects in the imitations. The article identifies two main strands in the pastiches: one that aims to correct the mistakes and fill in the gaps in the original stories, and one that supplements the canon with stories Watson left untold. Balancing among homage, criticism, and usurpation, the pastiches comment on the original story world and its cultura…
